  2. Characteristics • Has an inner skeleton with a backbone. • Has bilateral symmetry. • Has complex skin that is many times covered with either feathers, scales, or hair. • Can reproduce sexually. • Can be either warm or cold blooded, depending on the class of the chordate. • All chordates have a notochord-cartilaginous rod running underneath, and supporting, the nerve cord. They have a dorsal tubular nerve chord that connects the brain with the lateral muscles and other organs. Chordates also have pharyngeal pouches with which water is taken into the throat.

  3. Amphibians • They have an inner skeleton with NO backbone. • They have webbed feet, but NO claws. • They also have attached limbs at the shoulders and hips. • They take in oxygen through the skin and then it goes directly into the bloodstream. • They are cold-blooded so its body temperature is the same as the surrounding environment. • They begin their life in the water and then finish it on land.

  4. Fish • Cartilage fish don’t have hard bone, but flexible tissue. • Bony fish have hard bone like an angel fish. • Fish live completely in water. • A fish gets rid of wastes through its anus. • A fish has an inner skeleton. It has 2 sets of fins, the pectoral fins that are near the head and the pelvic fins that are further down the body. • A fish is cold blooded.

  5. Reptiles • They have an inner skeleton. • They have breast bones to protect the lungs and heart. • The have feet with claws. • A reptile is cold-blooded like an amphibian. • They are covered with scales. • They have a brain and nervous system. • Reptiles, such as a crocodile, live in water, but reptiles, such as snakes, live on land.

  6. birds • They have an internal skeleton with 2 pairs of limbs attached to the main body with 2 legs and 2 wings. • Their bones are full of holes and are very light to allow them to fly. • They also have relatively large eyes that allow them to judge distance well and they also have an excellent sense of hearing. • A bird is also warm-blooded. • Some birds fly in the sky while others walk on land like ostriches.

  7. MAMMALS • Mammals have an inner skeleton. They have developed muscles and generally have 4 limbs attached. • Herbivores eat plants, carnivores eat meat, and omnivores eat both. • They have lungs which help them breathe in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide. • Mammals have live birth and care for their young for quite some time. A mammal gives off milk to their young usually by breast feeding. • Mammals are warm-blooded.
