Entertaining Ecology Vocab

This article explores the study of living and non-living components of the environment, focusing on the organism, community, ecosystem, and population. It discusses the abiotic and biotic factors that determine where a population lives, including physical barriers like Point Conception and the Rocky Mountains, as well as physical disturbances like storm events and habitat destruction. It also highlights the importance of understanding food chains and food webs in ecological interactions.

  1. Entertaining Ecology Vocab Biology

  2. Cornell Notes

  3. Ecology • Study of living and non-living components of the environment & their interactions

  4. Organism • Any living thing

  5. Community • All living organisms in an area at a certain time

  6. Ecosystem • A community and its non-living environment

  7. Population • A group of organisms of the same species in the same place at the same time.

  8. So what determines where a population lives???

  9. Abiotic Factors • Non-living(sun, air, water, & rocks)

  10. Abiotic Factors • Physical Barriers * Point Conception

  11. Abiotic Factors • Physical Barriers * Point Conception * Rocky Mountains

  12. Abiotic Factors • Physical Disturbances * Storm events i.e. El Niño / La Niña * Drought * Volcanic eruptions * Habitat destruction * Climate change

  13. Abiotic BioticFactors Factors • Non-living(sun, air, water, & rocks) • Living or once living (bacteria, animals, & plants)

  14. Biotic Factors • Competition • Predation • Disease

  15. Producers/Autotrophs • Make their own food by photosynthesis • Sunlight + H20 + CO2------> Glucose + O2

  16. Consumers/Heterotrophs • Can’t make their own food

  17. Consumers/Heterotrophs • Can’t make their own food • Herbivores: Plant-eater

  18. Consumers/Heterotrophs • Carnivore: Meat eater

  19. Consumers/Heterotrophs • Omnivore: Eats both plants & animals

  20. Consumers/Heterotrophs • Decomposer: Eats dead plants & animals

  21. Food Chain • Transfer of energy from one level to another

  22. Ocean Food Chain

  23. Food Web • A group of interlocking food chains

  24. Synthesize your thoughts… • On the bottom of your notes, summarize what you learned today about ecology • Think about your ecosystem… • How do you interact with other living things on a daily basis?
