  3. Mission “Sisters of Mercy are women who commit their lives to God, deepening their relationship with God and serving God’s people, especially those who are sick, poor and uneducated. In the spirit of the Gospel, our mission is to help people to overcome the obstacles that keep them from living full and dignified lives. A life of prayer and community is at the heart of our shared mission.”

  4. History • Started in Dublin in 1827 • First House of Mercy on Lower Baggot Street • Place to shelter, feed and educate women and girls • Catherine McAuley • Irish Catholic Laywoman • Opened the House of Mercy

  5. Catherine McAuley • Born September 29, 1787 • Stormanstown House • Oldest of Three • Father Died 1794 • Catherine withheld Mr. McAuley’s memory by staying Catholic. • Dean Lube and Dr. Betagh • St. James’ Church

  6. Catherine McAuley • Interviewed with Rev. Dr. Murray • Received into the Church • Mr. Callahan’s Death 1822 • Left is entire fortune • Catherine gave back to the Coolock House • Decided God wanted her to help the poor

Beginning of Sisters of Mercy • Our Lady of Mercy • September 24, 1827 • Institution opened • Society of secular ladies • Instructing the poor • Monastic life • Not able to remain under secular rule • Named Sisters of Mercy • Works of mercy distinct feature of the institute. • Members • Combine with the silence and prayer of the Carmelite • Sister of Charity • Congregation unconnected with any already existing community. • Unanimously became religious.

  8. Sisters of Mercy Today • Six Communities • More than 3,900 Sisters • North, South and Central America • Carribean • Guam • Phillippines • More than 3,000 Mercy Associates • Over 600 Mercy Volunteer Corps alumni • Still follow the example of Mercy foundress, Catherine McAuley
