  1. Champaign Lion's Chatter (Click here to go to our website) 29 February 2012 Leap Year Call to Order — President David Lin called the meeting to order and led in the Pledge of Allegiance.

  2. Invocation – Dave Hunter - We thank Thee for this food, oh Lord, for friends and family and, on this operative day of leap year, please help my youngest daughter catch a husband. Amen. Vittles – Orange captain chicken, pearl couscous, mixed vegetables, ith cheese sauce, salad and toppings, bread and butter, strawberry pie, tea and coffee.

  3. Attendance – 24 members, 1 visitor. Guests – Bernie Archer (guest of Paul Kunkel)

  4. Birthdays – Dr. Frank Kresca, who is 91. Lions Report -- Jim Smith is in rehab across from the Windsor and is doing better. He welcomes visitors at room 104; If you are ill or know a fellow Lion that is under the weather, please call Pat Bryan at 586-4535.

  5. Lottery – Dave Hunter won the $12 lottery. (I’m not telling Carole Ann.)

  6. Announcements – Charlie Osborne announced Sam McGrew the winner of the basket ball raffle for the March 1st game (2 tickets), donated by Byron Balbach with dinner for 2 at Houlihans. We sold $1000 worth, which helps our Club Charities Fund.

  7. Rich King announced the State Convention in May in Decatur. He also announced that Saturday April 28 our club will have the water station for the Marathon.

  8. David Lin announced a Social in March that will be a bowling event. Our Lions Club Board meeting will be next Tuesday.

  9. Program – Charlie Osborne introduced -

  10. Emily Evans, who spoke about her trip to Honduras. She is a first year student at the Southern College of Optometry.

  11. They go to Central and South America to volunteer through SVOSH (Student volunteers in Optometric Service to Humanity).

  12. They provide free eye exams and eyeglassess to needy people. They work closely with Lions Clubs. The clubs at the destination sites provide translators, transportation and homes for them to stay in.

  13. The glasses come to the Southern College where the students sort and clean the glasses. The students also spend up to 30 hours raising at least $1000 each.

  14. They check for ocular health, dispense glasses and make referrals to local doctors. They can see up to 300 patients per day.

  15. Last year they performed 9,222 eye exams and provided 7,322 pairs of prescription glasses and thousands of sun glasses.

  16. This year they are going to Belize, Mexico, Jamaica, Columbia and Honduras, with new sites every year. Over 100 students and doctors participate each year.

  19. She gave us handouts to take home.

  20. Tail Twister – Omer Benn asked Pedro Heller to carry the bucket. He fined Sam McGrew for winning the raffle; Dave Hunter for the lottery, for his letter to the editor and for a joke. Then he fined himself $10 for a mistake he had made;

  21. he was sitting at home and answered the phone. An impersonator came on pretending to be his grandson and pretended to have had a car accident. The impersonator then gave the phone to a fake officer who wanted money to clean up the accident problem. Omer sent a $2,860 check. It all turned out to be a scam.
