POLICY CONTEXT Although noise limits have become increasingly stringent over the years, no corresponding significant reduction in noise levels in urban areas has been observed => European noise policy has been revised to focus on noise perception to avoid the harmful effects of noise exposure from all sources and to preserve quiet areas

OBJECTIVES SILENCE is a research project aiming to develop an integrated methodology and technology for improved control of surface transport noise in urban areas and looking at: • noise control at source • noise propagation • noise emission • human perception of noise For: road – rail – infrastructure - cities

  4. PROJECT DATA • Funded by European Commission under Sixth Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration • Integrated Project • Start: 1 February 2005 • Duration: 3 years • Coordinator: AVL List (AT) • 42 partners

PARTNERSHIP Mix of European expertise: • City authorities • Urban public transport operators • National operators of railway traffic and road / rail infrastructure • Public research institutes and universities • Research and engineering institutions • European associations • Vehicle manufacturers and integrators • Suppliers of equipment, systems and technology for vehicles / infrastructure • Specialised small & medium enterprises

OUTCOME SILENCE will provide: • Relevant and world-leading technologies for efficient control of surface transport noise • Innovative strategies for action plans for urban transport noise abatement and practical tools for their implementation • A significant reduction of people’s exposure to noise, especially in real urban conditions The overall outcome of SILENCE should be a reduction of noise emission by up to 10 dBA
