  4. Malaysian assistance directed mainly to Aceh and Sri Lanka • Malaysia has strong cultural and linguistic links with Aceh • Migrants from Aceh and Sri Lanka are significant minorities in Malaysia

  5. Forms of assistance • Material (immediate) • Money, equipment • Manpower assistance for outpatient clinics (up to 6 months) • Displaced people at camps (identified by primary care givers) • Field hospital clinics • Psychiatric hospital

  6. Forms of assistance • Training (1 – 2 years) • In mental health for primary care staff / lay volunteers across the affected areas • Nursing school (in Aceh) • Pharmacy school (in Aceh)

  7. Current situation • One to 2 psychiatrists/psychologists in each country • Banda Aceh and Kalmunai (Sri Lanka) • Plans to expand services to other areas • MERCY Malaysia (Malaysian Association for Medical Relief) main sponsor at present • Malaysian Airlines / Air Force Flights

Miscellaneous 500 500 • ___________________________________________________________ • TOTAL (RM) 4620 5620 ___________________________________________________________ • Approximately US$ 1100 for Aceh and $ 1400 for Sri Lanka, per person. MERCY Malaysia is willing to help reduce this cost. For e.g. for the present we are getting free flight tickets courtesy of MAS to Aceh and Sri Lanka. That will save us a lot of money in the long run. But we don’t know how long it will last. • We would need at least 2 persons per fortnight, for 6 months or until local people can take over the services.
