  3. Lesson Objectives By the end of the lesson you will be able to: • Describe different types of optical storage media and their advantages and disadvantages • Explain the term “Backup” • Suggest some uses of optical storage

  5. To Summarise… • Optical storage is the reading and writing of data to discs using a LASER • Light is bounced off the disc to detect which bits are pits and which are flat • These translate into 0’s and 1’s • Data is written in a continuous spiral.

  6. Task 2 • You know enough to answer the questions for task 2 now. • You can NOT use the internet to help you!

  7. Backup Why? Spot the odd one out: A backup could be… • A copy of files stored on a USB memory stick • A copy of files stored on a DVD • A copy of files stored in a separate folder from the original • A copy of files stored on an external hard drive

  8. So… • What IS a backup then? An EXACT copy of data, stored EXTERNALLY to the original

  9. Why backup? • How could data get lost? • How could backups help us?

  10. Task 3 • Complete task 3 on your worksheet • Again, no internet to help you!

  11. Task 4 Part (a) Using www.igcseict.info http://www.igcseict.info/theory/3/optic/index.html • Fill in the capacities column ONLY • Also, find out what “R” and “RW” mean

  12. Task 4 Part (b) • Do a quick Google to find the cost of ONE of each disc • You might have to do some dividing… • It DOESN’T MATTER if you get different answers!

  13. Task 4 Part (c) • Using the useful information and anything from IGCSEICT.INFO • Fill in the good and bad points • Think about: • What will people want to backup • How many times you can use a disc • Cost!

  14. Homework Your instructions are on your worksheet… • Write this down in your planners. Questions • What is the size of the hard drive on your home computer or laptop? • How much space have you used up on that drive? • How many CD's would you need to back up your data? • How many DVD's would you need to back up your data? • How many Blu Ray discs would you need to back up your data? • Taking into consideration the price, speed and capacity of each type of disc, compare each type to find out which would be most suitable for your backup needs and why? You should mention: a) the time it would take to backup and restore the data b) the cost of the discs c) the storage implications (e.g. it would be difficult to store 600 CD's)

  15. Plenary • Mr Davidson doesn’t like spending money. • Ever!!! • On your worksheet write a convincing argument to persuade him to finally upgrade to a Blu Ray drive in his PC. • Explain what the benefits over CD and DVD are and give some reasons why Blu Ray may be more useful.
