  1. Perfecting work management The Aphorisms of Patanjali Rajiv Nadig DIYA Bangalore

  2. Concept of Management Management is often being talked as.. • Skill • Excellence • Communication • Co-ordination and • Adjustment – through harmony in thinking and action

  3. YOGA • Any method for excellence joins us with a better form of our self is called Yoga • Yoga means “to join” • Yoga is “excellence in work” योग: कर्मसु कौशलम GITA • Yoga is “skill in all works” Sri Aurobindo

  4. Patanjali • Patañjali. 2nd c. is the compiler of the Yoga Sutras, an important collection of aphorisms on Yoga practice, and also the author of the Mahābhāṣya, a major commentary on Panini's Ashtadhyayi. • However, whether these two works are that of the same author or not remains in some doubt. • He has been one of the greater seer and Maharshi inspiring billions since ages.

  5. Patanjali Yoga Sutras • Patanjali gave 195 aphorisms to achieve excellence • The aphorisms are divided into 4 books • Samadhipad (Book of concentration) 51 Sutras • Sadhanpad (Means of attainment) 55 Sutras • Vibhutipad (Supernormal Powers) 55 Sutras • Kaivalyapad (Perfection in Isolation) 34 Sutras • The aphorism is a distilled form of knowledge • It reveals its meaning when meditates on the aphorism • These are rules for living • Not for others, but for oneself

  6. Agenda Patanjali deals mainly with three aspects: • How to diagnose & correct negative hurdles in life • How to enhance efficiency in day to day life • How to develop work perfection

  7. How to diagnose & correct negative hurdles in life

  8. Benefits of diagnosing hurdles • It begins with an understanding of human thought processes and the hurdles which deter us from realizing our true selves. • Then the ability to understand the goal fully and correctly is apparent • In the absence of this state, the ability to understand the goal is replaced by • Mind’s conception of the goal or • A total lack of comprehension

  9. Hurdles to the path of perfection • Distractions • Illness • Languor • Doubt • Lack of foresight • Fatigue • Lack of perseverance

  10. 5 basis of reaction Direct information Prejudices Inferences Thoughtless actions Visualization

  11. Direct information Direct information • This is the truest form of understanding • Here we gain knowledge through • Direct cognition, Sensory evidence, Inference • Testimony, Revelations, Tested and validated facts • You have some form of contact with the object or scenario • Examples • When you report about a scene you have been part of

  12. Inferences Inference / Interpretation • This the most form of knowledge and leads to difficulties. • Our knowledge does not correspond to the object • This is obtained through • Erroneous interpretation, delusion • Illusion and assumption • Examples • Mirage • When you report based on hearsay

  13. Visualization Visualization • This is when an image is conjured up by just words • There is no contact with the object • Examples • Novels like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings etc. • How you react when you visualize the reaction to a proposal

  14. Thoughtless actions Thoughtless actions • These are our reactions where we do not think before acting

  15. Prejudices Prejudices • These are reactions based on prior experiences • This is beneficial if the prior experience and the present experience are identical • This can be harmful if …..

  16. How to control the distraction ? • Practice • It succeeds only when the correct practice is followed for • a long time • Without interruptions • Positive attitude • Eagerness • Detachment

  17. How to control the obstacles? • Constant practice on one truth • Friendliness • Compassion • Gladness • Equanimity to joy and sorrow • Control over one’s breath • Knowledge gained through dreams or dreamless sleep • Meditation

  18. Perfection in Work Management • Perfection in work management can be accomplished in three phases: 1. Intellectual expertise 2. Working excellence (as visible in day-today life) 3. Based on above two – development of perfection

  19. How to enhance efficiency in day to day life

  20. Achieving Perfection • Yogic Attitude Towards Life • A positive attitude to be adopted in each & every approach which helps in work management and perfection • Yogic Lifestyle: • A way of life which leads to body & mind harmony with skill in all its action • Yogic Techniques & Procedures: • Adopting which one can achieve perfection. Each and everyone can easily practice them to become a successful manager

  22. PWM – Step 1 contd. Important steps : Fluctuation in our thoughts, originating in mind-brain stuff leads to constant loss of life-energies That is the reason we need right life style guided by righteous thinking…. Role of Gayatri Mantra in daily Upasana

  23. Perfection in Work Management • Patanjali gives a 8 fold path to achieve excellence Samadhi Dhyana Dharana Pratyahara Pranayama Asana Niyama Yama

  24. Steps 1 and 2 – Yama, Niyama Maharishi Patanjali explains that first steps to a righteous lifestyle is through Yama & Niyama – in Sadhanpad (means of sadhna) Sutras 29,30,32 vfgalklR;kLrs;czg~ep;kZifjxzgk ;ek% 2&30 àækSplarksári% Lok/;kls’ojizf.k/kkukfu fu;ek% 2&32 One can also get the benefits of these by developing 9 qualities

  25. 9 qualities for righteous lifestyle • Responsibility • Integrity • Courage • Common sense • Hard work • Frugality • Civility • Organized life • Cooperation

  26. Step 3 : Asana Physical health to be in order: Our body should be physically fit to combat all hurdles and tense situations arising in management Asans are very easy and powerful method for making ourselves physically tough and fit “TatoDwandwanAbhighatah” Rkrks }U}kufHk?kkr%(2/48) Mastering the postures one is not overcome by extremes, by cold & heat or any other factor affecting body and mind

  27. Step 4 : Pranayam Healthy, Clean and Concentrated Mind: After unassailing all extremes by asans, Patanjali devices Pranayam ”Tatah Kshiyate Prakashawaranam”rr% {kh;rs izdk’kkoj.ke~2/52

  28. Perfection in Work Management • Covering of light of knowledge (by ignorance) dwindles away by practicing restraint of breath • Sadhak’s karmas (Kusamskars) which cover the light of soul become powerless • It brings purity and clear shining of thought

  29. Perfection in Work Management For getting rid of all mental fatigues & wearing out and developing power of concentration, best device is Pranayam

  30. Basic Rules for Pranayam • Environment should be clean fresh and peaceful • The posture should be erect sitting on vajraor sukh asana • Appropriate time is the early morning (one hour before and one hour after sunrise, Brahma Muhurt ) • Stomach should be empty • Negative thoughts to be restricted • Relax after doing Pranayam • Meditation to be performed with Pranayam

  31. Dharana Next He says: “Dharanasu Cha Yogyata Manasah”2/53/kkj.kklq p ;ksX;rk eul% for fixed attention, ability develops in a being. Pranayam steadies the central organs specially our brain stem & makes it fit for going to stage of meditation.

  32. Perfection in Work Management For intellectual expertise, intuition or ”Antarpragya” has to be awakened • Patanjali says – ”Ritambhara Tatra Pragya”_rEHkjk r= izKk1/48and • – ”Shrutanuman Pragyabhyam Anyavishaya Vishesharthtwat”JqrkuqekuizKkH;keU;foá;k fo’ksákFkZRokr~ 1/49

  37. How to Meditate * You can also focus on sound of Aum or Mantra or a meaningful word or phrase.   OR * Mentally recite mantra in synchrony with your breathing. Even 20 minutes of inner equipoise is enough to give you inner peace and freshness.

  38. How to develop work perfection

  39. Emotional Sharing & Caring • Work perfection in management can be achieved only when each member of team specially leader, participates in emotional sharing & caring. • For this Patanjali says – “Sukhanushayi Ragah”.lq[kkuq’k;h jkx%2/7and “Dukhanushayi Dweshah”nq%[kkuq’k;h }sá%2/8 – Passion is that which dwells upon pleasure and aversion is that which dwells upon all sufferings & pains – For getting rid of Rag & Dwesh.
