  5. Small Groups Practiced media interviews Recorded and then played back for feedback from expert and the small group

What We Learned • Upcoming USDA standards for competitive foods • Foods/beverages outside the school lunch program • Vending machines, school stores, and a la carte lines • Standards have not been updated in 30 years • USDA standards for school meal program updated in January (first in 15 years), implemented this fall. • 40% of schoolchildren consume competitive foods

  7. Public Support • 80% support standards for competitive foods • Bipartisan • 84% of this support due to concern for children’s health • 68-83% realized that competitive foods were not healthful

Key Messages • All foods and beverages available in schools should be healthy. • 50% of daily calories consumed during school hours • Healthier foods in schools will mean healthier kids. • Improving school meals only takes us halfway. • 40% of kids consume competitive foods • Schools can achieve this goal. • Examples of successful and profitable schools

Key Messages (cont.) • Schools need to support healthy habits parents teach at home • Parents want their kids to eat healthy. • Even the best parents can’t monitor what their kids eat and drink at school. • This is an urgent issues that affects all of us • Increased incidence of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure among children and adolescents
