  1. PRELIMINARY ENERGY ACTION PLAN Meeting in Chania 19-21/5/2010 MUNICIPALITY OF NEA KYDONIA – CRETE —————— INCUBATOR OF NEW ENTERPRISES OF CHANIA

Municipality of Nea Kydonia is located west of Chania, in an area of 2150 hectares. • It has a population of 7500 inhabitants and approximately 18000 beds in hotels of all categories. • The estimated energy consumption in the hotels in this municipality is 35.758 KWh during 2009 and the CO2 emissions due to energy use are 28.606 tn CO2.

The Energy saving potential in the hotels includes: • Proper insulation of the building • Replacing old bulbs with new more efficient • Improving power ratio (cos φ) • Install ceiling fans in the rooms • Install automatic energy control in the rooms • Regular maintenance of heating and cooling system

  5. The Renewable energies’ potential in the hotels includes: • Hot water production with solar thermal systems • Space and water heating with solid biomass • Use of PV systems • Use of goethermal heat pumps with high C.O.P.

  6. The energy savings in hotels of Nea Kydonia due to various measures include: • Installation of solar thermal systems for hot water production, particularly in summer operating hotels • Replacing old bulbs with new energy efficient • Installation of automatic power control in each room • Use of heat pumps with high C.O.P. Currently air to air heat pumps are broadly used with C.O.P. = 2 • Proper insulation of the buildings (roof and walls) and replacing old windows with new with double glazing • Installation of ceiling fans in the rooms • Use of PV systems for power generation in the case of attractive feed in tarrifs

Financial Incentives • The municipality can inform and facilitate any possible investor about financial opportunities Legal Tools Make obligatory the energy performance certificate for tourism enterprises if they want to have an operation license. b) Facilitate procedures for energy efficient construction c)A member of the municipality council will be responsible for energy issues in collaboration with a staff member like an engineer of the municipality

  10. Communication - Information • The communication plan in municipality of NeaKydonia will include: • Participation in the organization of seminars with various specialized structures of the private sector, which will be focused in the hotel owners and the staff of tourist enterprises. • Co-organization of an info day about energy saving and application of renewables in tourism sector, together with other municipalities in the prefecture of Chania and the local Universities and Research Institutes.

  11. Communication - Information c) Organization of yearly campaigns • In the primary and secondary schools in the municipality • In various hotels of the municipality during the summer period d) Creation of a section in the web portal of the municipality, regarding the possibilities and the opportunities for applications of cost effective energy investments in hotels and other enterprises in tourism sector.

  12. Creation of an advising and support structure • Municipality of Nea Kydonia can participate in a support structure which will be created with other municipalities in a cooperative form.
