  1. Acts 2:22-24 – “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.” Notice the audience – men of Israel From whence did Jesus come and was this what the Jews expected? His credibility as a man by miracles, wonders (inexplicable) and signs is noted – what the Jews needed but questioned the source (Mark 3:22) which God did through Him in their midst – all around them which they know – eido (factual knowledge) The Acts of the Apostles Acts 2:22-36 “Peter Preaches about Jesus” 1 February 16, 2014 Bob Eckel

  2. Him (this one man, emphatic pronoun), being delivered – perfect passive by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God Rom 1:4 - anddeclared (determined) to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead Rev 13:8 - All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. foreknowledge – prognosis (Isa 53:1-12) And Peter appears to be attributing His crucifixion to the men of Israel (ye - plural), but some texts omit ‘ye have taken’. and by lawless hands – outside of the Law of Moses; wicked But each one of us can personalize this too can’t we – Rom 5:8; I Pet 3:18 But then it was in God’s hands raised up and loosed the pains of death Describe the pains of death The Acts of the Apostles Acts 2:22-36 “Peter Preaches about Jesus” 2 February 16, 2014 Bob Eckel

  3. impossible for Him to be bound like the rest of men Then how do we interpret John 10:18 - “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.” Acts 2:25-28 - “For David says concerning Him:‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face,For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. or You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.” This is Psalm 16:8-11 in the Septuagint. The Greek translation of the Hebrew in the 3rd century B.C. 4. ‘In this Psalm David spoke of God as being at his right hand, a figure for close association and powerful assistance. Peter saw Jesus' presence in heaven at God's right hand as an extension of what David had written.’ – Constable Notice the hope and joy of both David and Peter. Heart rejoiced and tongue was glad Spared from Hades, the place of departed spirits (O.T. Sheol). In the Greek Hades is tbe absence of light The statement that the body would not suffer decay expressed the belief that God would keep him (us) from ultimate humiliation. Rev 30:13 - The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. The right hand was a place of dignity and honor. Matt 20:21 - And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and The Acts of the Apostles Acts 2:22-36 “Peter Preaches about Jesus” 4 February 16, 2014 Bob Eckel

  5. the other on the left, in Your kingdom.” that I might not be shaken (moved) – Psalm 62:2,6 Overall these verses point to Christ's resurrection and enthronement. You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence. The resurrection life Phil 4:1 - Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved. Acts 2: 29-32 - “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to The Acts of the Apostles Acts 2:22-36 “Peter Preaches about Jesus” 5 February 16, 2014 Bob Eckel

  6. the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, He, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Notice that Peter is speaking freely! The patriarch (a pedigree, head of the fathers), and David’s tomb is on Mt. Zion – I Kings 2:10, Neh 3:16 And unlike Jesus, David is not resurrected. But the promise through the prophet David of the Lord Jesus Christ and His resurrection is quoted here by Peter Psalm 132:11 - The Lord has sworn in truth to David; He will not turn from it: “I will set upon your throne the fruit of your body” Psalm 89:3,4 - “I have made a covenant with My chosen,I have sworn to My servant David: ‘Your seed I will establish forever, The Acts of the Apostles Acts 2:22-36 “Peter Preaches about Jesus” 6 February 16, 2014 Bob Eckel

  7. and build up your throne to all generations.’ ” How much more evidence does the skeptic need? And note, not stated is that Jesus is sitting on David’s throne, an earthly not heavenly place. Two different thrones – II Sam 7:11-16 This in verse 32 refers back to this one manin verse 22. And we, men of Israel, are the witnesses (Acts 1:8 also)! Acts 2:33-36 - “Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but He says Himself:‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool  Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” The Acts of the Apostles Acts 2:22-36 “Peter Preaches about Jesus” 7 February 16, 2014 Bob Eckel

  8. Therefore – what’s it there for? David is in the tomb and the Lord Jesus Christ is exalted The Holy Spirit has been given which they could see and hear The Lord Jesus Christ has been triumphant over death and positioned at the right hand (Psalm 110:1; Heb 1:3) For Israel He is both Lord (Kyrios) and the Christ (Christos) Kyrios – Messiah with power, master, sovereign John 17:2 - “You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. Eph 1:20-22 - which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, Christos – Messiah, the anointed one And the house of Israel is responsible for all they know and have experienced. As we are too – Rom 3:23! The Acts of the Apostles Acts 2:22-36 “Peter Preaches about Jesus” 8 February 16, 2014 Bob Eckel
