It all started one day after school while I was waiting for Two-Bit drive me home. I was sitting in the bleachers with a book, Gone With the Wind. It was the copy Johnny left me when he died and it was my most valuable possession. After Johnny and Dally died, I had clamed up and stopped talking as much. Two-Bit liked to say that I had gone mute. I could tell my brothers were worried, so I tried to pretend like I was fine. I still had terrible nightmares even a year after my friends' deaths. My grades had improved since then, basically because I wanted to make Johnny and Dally proud. When I felt like giving up, I pushed myself even harder, to the point where even Darry was worried. I rarely went out anymore, except to the movies. I still watched sunsets, each one reminding me a bit of Johnny. I didn't tell the gang this because I didn't feel like being teased. "Good tastes," someone behind me said. I turned around and saw a girl. This girl definitely wasn't a greaser girl. She had on a nice white blouse with a red graceful skirt that made her green eyes pop and her auburn hair shine. She was wearing a bit of makeup, but nothing like Evie or Angela Sheppard ever wore. I just stared at her. "In books, I mean. Gone With the Wind, it's a great book. I love the movie, but t just doesn't compare with the book. I'm Audrey Toohey, by the way. I just moved here from Chicago. My dad's the new principal." she rambled on a bit.
In other words… • Fan Fiction is a short piece of writing where you continue the story. • Think of it as the “lost page” from your book or the extra mini chapter that was never printed.
First, you have to choose which character you will continue to write about (there will be rules as to how many characters you can include).
Then, you have to choose when and where your story will take place . Ask yourself… • Do I want to take up where the original author left off? • Do I want to fast forward 10 years? • Do I want to change the setting to a place that would make sense for my character? • Is there something in the original story that the character always wanted to do and this is my chance to take him or her there?!?
Next, think about what your character would do the day after the last chapter ended. Ask yourself… • When I finished the book, what did I think was going to happen? • What was my character good at? How would that play into the later part of their life?
Or, when considering what your character would be doing in a later part of their life, Ask yourself… • Based on my understanding of the character, he or she would be doing… • Was there an unresolved issue that most readers would want solved? How would it be solved according to the original text?
Finally, you have to determine what your purpose is for writing the continuation. Ask yourself… • Will my piece answer any unanswered questions left by the author? • Will my piece tell the reader more about the character’s development?
Guidelines (a.k.a. RULES)
Rule #1 Be careful how many characters you use. Although you may be tempted to use several, try sticking to just one or two. The more characters you have, the more confusing your short piece will become.
Rule #2 It may also be tempting to change your characters (alter personalities, change perspectives, vary their looks and “normal” way of doing things), but DON’T! While in some FAN FICTION pieces the authors do change many things about their characters, for your short piece, this will only make things more confusing to the readers.
Rule # 3 Use your book club group to be an objective judge between creative yet plausible ideas and just unrealistic plots. Let them tell you if you're being true to the characters. Or sometimes they just tell you that something seems off. They are your audience!
Rule # 4 Always have a purpose to your fan fiction piece. Rule #5 Don’t fill your piece with dialogue. The reader wants to hear the narration just like they did in the actual story!
