  1. Technology Migration What Will Tomorrow Look Like ?

  2. The Technology Challenge

  3. Did You Know? • Concerned Family Members represent the largest caregiver organization of the Elderly? • There are approximately 16 Million family members within the United States which try to manage from over 50 miles away. • 4 Major adoption barriers still exist and must be overcome to successfully utilize home health monitoring technologies in a wide-spread manner.

  4. Barriers to Wide Spread Adoption and Utilization of Home Health Monitoring • Broadband Adoption • Too Expensive – Too Confusing • Penetration vs. Utilization • Cost • Hardware and Monitoring • Provider/Insurer Stalemate • Digital Illiteracy and Support • No consumer educational or training • New Technology Integration • Lack of reimbursement limits R&D

  5. Barriers to Wide Spread Adoption and Utilization of Home Health Monitoring • Cost • No standardized reimbursement policies have yet to be adopted, therefore hardware and monitoring fees also remain high. • Result – Too expensive for mass adoption Those who would really benefit– can’t afford it

  6. BroadBand – Too Expensive • Average Cost of Broadband/Internet Service • $49.46 / month • $45.73 = National Average • 1.1 Million Minnesotans who do not have broadband cited COST as the main reason Source: Connect Minnesota 2011

  7. Broadband – Too Confusing • Broadband Adoption • Too Confusing • 2nd and 3rd largest for NOT adopting Broadband • Digital Literacy and Relevance • Over40 different US government broadband programs – • Discounts programs for everyone • How do you get to them? • Penetration vs. Utilization • 95% Penetration < 60% Utilization in Some Areas

  8. Broadband – Too Confusing

  9. Proposed Solutions • We must THINK and ACT Differently • Increase Consumer Awareness and Education on the Benefits of Broadband and Home Health Monitoring. • Work with Broadband Providers state-wide to offer special broadband healthcare monitoring “data packages” to better utilize home health monitoring technologies. • Must develop centralized technology resource centers for consumers and healthcare workers to support home health monitoring / broadband enabled care. • Must bring dialogue and debate to engage the entire community on this issue.

  10. Into the Future • Whenever New Technologies Are Contemplated….. • Remember the Technology Hype Cycle • Where does the New Technology Fit? • How Can It be Successfully Moved Along the Curve? • Try to Accurately Identify: • All Barriers To Full Scale Adoption (BFSA). • Possible Solution Sets That Successfully Addressed BFSA. • Engage ALL Potential Users and Shareholders of the Proposed New Technology Solution.

  11. Speaking of New Technologies….. • Avatar-Based Care Giving • Robotic Medication Reminder System • Robotic Care Givers
