  1. MARK SHAYLER THE EMERGENCE OF A CIRCULAR ECONOMY: A DISRUPTIVE INFLUENCE FOR ENERGY FROM WASTE?

  2. WHAT IS THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY?

  3. WHEN ‘WASTE’ WAS A PROBLEM, EFW WAS A SOLUTION. NOW WASTE IS A SOLUTION IS EFW A PROBLEM?.

  4. LETS LOOK AT THE FACTSINCINERATION WITH ENERGY RECOVERY HAS DOUBLED IN THE LAST TEN YEARS.FORECAST TO GROW FROM 1.2TWH TO OVER 3TWH BY 2020ENERGY SECURITY IS A BIG CONCERN.

  5. “THE POTENTIAL FOR ENERGY FROM WASTE TO CONSUME MATERIALS WHICH COULD OTHERWISE BE MANAGED HIGHER UP IN THE WASTE HIERARCHY IS A LEGITIMATE CONCERN. THIS IS NOT A FUNDAMENTAL ISSUE ARISING FROM ENERGY FROM WASTE AS A PROCESS, BUT RATHER AS A RESULT OF OPPORTUNITIES NOT BEING TAKEN TO SEPARATE AND REMOVE MATERIALS FROM RESIDUAL WASTE.”DEFRA 2013

  6. ENERGY FROM WASTE HAS A GATE FEE OF CIRCA £80 PER TONNE.MIXED PET GENERATES AN INCOME OF CIRCA £145 A TONNE.£235 DIFFERENCE

  7. THE CARBON BENEFIT OF RECYCLING A TONNE OF HDPE/PET IS 1.8 TONNES CO2THE INCINERATION BENEFIT IS WAY LESS - CES AS LITTLE AS NO BENEFIT.

  8. IN TERMS OF GIGA JOULES 1 TONNE PET:RECYCLING BENEFIT: 53.5ENERGY FROM WASTE: 11.3SOURCE: CES 2013

  9. DEMAND FOR RAW MATERIALS IS RISING

  10. IF WE HAVEN’T GOT STUFF WE CAN’T MAKE THINGS.

  11. IF WE DON’T MAKE THINGS WE DON’T HAVE A FUTURE.

  12. EFW HAS A ROLE IN ALL THIS.

  13. WE NEED TO USE IT APPROPRIATELY AND ONE PROBLEM IS THAT CONTRACTS CAN RUN FOR 20 YEARS. EFW IS HUNGRY, IT NEEDS FEEDING.

  14. SO, WE NEED TO USE THE APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE APPROPRIATE WASTE. WE NEED TO APPLY THE WASTE HIERARCHY (YAWN). BUT THERE ARE SOME PROBLEMATIC PLASTICS: CPET, PP, LAMINATES, ABS. AS MARKETS CHANGE AND DEMANDS FLUCTUATE.

  15. THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY SITS AT THE HEART OF A NEW ECONOMY AND IT THREATENS TO DISRUPT MATERIAL FLOWS AND TRADITIONAL TREATMENTS.

  16. IT MAY JUST BE A CRAZE. A RE-HASH OF AN OLD ONE. BUT UNLIKE FURBY, ITS WELCOME.
