  2. What Is Summary • A Summary is a concise abridgment of an article that restates the main ideas of the original text. • A "stand-alone" summary is a summary produced to show a teacher that you have read and understood something. 

  3. Summary Writing Format • When writing a summary, remember that it should be in the form of a paragraph. • A summary begins with an introductory sentence that states the text’s title, author, and the main point of the text as you see it. • A summary is written in your own words. • A summary contains only the ideas of the original text. Do not insert any of your own opinions, interpretations, deductions, or comments into a summary. • Identify in order the significant sub-claims the author uses to defend the main point. • Write the last sentence that “wraps” up your summary; often a simple rephrasing of the main point.

  4. How To Produce a summary • Read the article to be summarized and be sure you understand it. • Outline the article. Note the major points. • Write a first draft of the summary without looking at the article. • Target your first draft for approximately 1/4 of the length of the original.

  5. Introduction • State the publication details of the article (its title, author, year, and journal) • Provide one sentence with background information about the author if relevant • Define the research question and thesis of the article

  6. Body • List the main arguments of the article, paraphrasing them • Refer to the supporting points the author has used to prove the arguments • Identify the research methods (qualitative/quantitative/mixed)

  7. Conclusion • Restate the findings and conclusions of the article • Indicate the limitations of the article

  8. Dos • Paraphrase • Use present tense • Use author tags (like “the author concludes/argues/proves” etc.) • Follow the same order of ideas as the original article • Reference the article

  9. Don’ts • Overly generalize • Give opinion and explain why you are writing the essay • Quote directly from the source • Outline specific figures, details, dates
