  1. Week of July 28, 2014 McMillan’s Message Math Fifth Grade Math – Lessons 13, 16, 17, 18, and test on Friday. Course 1 – Lessons 3-7. It is necessary on several problems for the students to show their work. Story problem answers must be labeled to get credit. Reading • Last week students took the STAR test, which is the placement component of AR. This week students will set their independent reading goals for the 1st Quarter. Students should be transporting a chapter book between home and school each day to make progress. • We will begin our new reading program called, “Journeys”. On Monday the students will take a placement test, which will give me data I need for our small group work. To begin with, this week we will be working whole group on a piece of text called, “A Package for Mrs. Jewls”. We will analyze the text and work on questioning and vocab. strategies. Science Last week we reviewed scientific method, using bubble gum. Monday the students had an assessment, using a circle map to show what they learned about the scientific method process. This week they will work with teams to build a spaghetti bridge that will hold an envelope of coins, and compare that to a bridge made of linguini. The experiments will be written up using the scientific method. Upcoming Events Wednesday, July 30th.– Curriculum Night @ 7:00 p.m. I am hoping for at least one parent for each student to be in attendance. It takes place in room 29, and I’ll be going over this year’s expectations and routines. *Adults only. If you cannot make it, I will email the PowerPoint presentation to you. Social Studies • We will begin our early European explorers unit by studying geography and latitude/longitude. • We will begin a read aloud of Pedro’s Journal, which is the story of Columbus’s first voyage. Fun Fact! We had a productive first week, and my students are looking forward to their parents seeing some of their work displayed in the room on Curriculum Night.
