  1. MEG Beam Line Studies E5 Z-Branch NOW !!! MEG-Review February 2004

  2. Topics to be Addressed • Summary of Status at the time of the last Review • Current Component Status • Summary/Conclusions • Beam Line Schedule MEG-Review February 2004

  3. Summary Status (Review July 2003) • Beam Line Milestone just achieved – • Successful test of optics up to point of injection into COBRA Solenoid • As well as beam properties(Phase Space, Stopping rate, Separation Quality, etc.) • matching the proposed values • … using temporary components !!! Triplet I Separator II Triplet II PSC-Solenoid in: Nov. 2002 Defect !!! most Last Run Temporary Temporary out: Jun. 2003 out: Jun. 2003 out: Jun. 2003 out: Jun. 2003 -> LEM -> New -> Shorter -> Too Short Bore too small MEG-Review February 2004

  4. Summary Status (Review July 2003) – cont. • Beam Transport Solenoid BTS - under study • estimated earliest delivery …early summer 2004 • LN2 + LHe transfer Linesunder discussion • Remaining Beam Elements - under discussion MEG-Review February 2004

  5. Current Component Status – Triplet I + Separator • Triplet I: • - QSB Quadrupole magnetsbeing removed • during re-build of µE4 Area during • current Shutdown, will be assembled • as triplet • - Wagonfor triplet being constructed from • lower-part of shielding wagon • - High Acceptance +-slit Vacuum Chamber • under design •  Insertion Shutdown 2004 (~April) • Separator : • - New Vertical Separator was approved for MEG • design underway & HV-parts ordered •  not expected before October 2004 !!! MEG-Review February 2004

  6. Current Component Status – Triplet II + BTS • Triplet II: • -QSK Triplet + VacuumChamber removed from µE4 beam line • during current shutdown •  Available after shutdown 2004 (April) • Beam Transport Solenoid BTS: • - New superconducting solenoid which • replaces PSC-test Sol. used in Beam Tests • -Delayed !!! – due to • COBRA coupling problems more • complexthan envisaged • (ii) non-negligible amount of time • invested in beam & detector setup • simulation for LXe Large Prototype • test in 1 Oct. end Dec.2003 COBRA BTS MEG-Review February 2004

  7. Trip. Colli. WIEN Solenoid µ+ µ+ Triplet 2 e+ e+ Filter 1 Current Component Status – BTS cont. BTS – Complications: (i) focusing optics at Collimator found to be v. sensitive to STRAY FIELD solenoid excitation curve DESTROYED if Bfield TOO LARGE 50% of Stray Field from COBRA 5m away !!!  Compensation Coil Needed upstream of BTS under Design… MEG-Review February 2004

  8. COBRA BTS Deg1 Deg2 Current Component Status – BTS cont. • BTS – Complications: • (ii) • Requirements: • - BTS Bfield must have min. influence • on COBRA field in fiducial region • Min. beam-spot size at Target • contradictory!!! •  Only free parameters (coupled): • BBTS & ΔLCOBRA-BTS • Focus also dependent on how split degrader (M.S. vs. Background) Full Simulation underway: • TRANSPORT, TURTLE, Track  Optics • GEANT  spot-size, resolution • ANSYS  Magnetic influence • Delivery BTS not before ~Nov. 2004 MEG-Review February 2004

  9. Current Component Status – Cryo. Lines + Targets • LN2 & LHeTransfer Lines: • In planning phase • Targets: • simulation work concerning size underway in conjunction • with BTS studies, after which mechanics & He-Bag question • will be tackled MEG-Review February 2004

  10. Summary/Conclusions • Shutdown 2004 until mid April • Initially only Triplet I used for Timing-counter beam time while • COBRA installation runs in parallel (behind Concrete wall) • Old Separator + new Triplet II used for commissioning up to • BTS injection (June/July) • New Separator not until, at least October • BTS not before November so that commissioning 2nd part of • beam line (Need ~6 weeks for this) at end of year i.e. BTS must • arrive by beginning Nov. to use time effectively, otherwise Gotta • (PROBLEM GOTTA et al. 6 weeks BT end-of-year) • If beam line commissioned by end December •  Bfield Mapping COBRA during Shutdown 2004/5 Delay in Full Commissioning of MEG beam Line now expected Though Should NOT Delay Experiment Start !!! MEG-Review February 2004

  11. Provisional MEG Beam Schedule Gotta et al. ??? MEG-Review February 2004
