  2. Ferdinand of Aragon son of King John I of Aragon (1452-1516) • Isabella of Castile daughter of King John II of Castile (1451-1504) • Were royal cousins and married in 1469 • Ferdinand had a political education • Known as two of the top European monarchs in history

  3. Government/ Politics • 1478 brought back the Inquisition in Spain • Three decades ruled most of modern day Spain • Castile, Aragon, Catalonia and Valencia had separate councils of state and parliaments • Left Spain as one of the greatest countries in Europe

  4. Religion • 1525 most people in Spain were officially Christian • Had many Jews and Muslims converted to Christian but practiced previous religion in private • They intended to spread Christianity to the new world • People who were non-Christians were expelled from Spain • Religious laws were frequently enforced particularly in Aragon

  5. Economy/ Trade • Christopher Columbus, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, Hernando Cortes all went on voyages to discover new lands. • Sold and traded slaves

  6. Technology/ Warfare • 10 year war to unite their land under Christian leadership • All Muslims out of Spain • Conquered last Muslim stronghold in 1492 • Unified and conquered most of Spain • Muslims were part of Iberian Peninsula for more than 700 years

  7. Legacy Spain became an all Christian country in 1525
