  2. Predictive Thermometry:Definition A means of determining (predicting) body temperature by using an electronic device (thermometer) that uses a computer method or algorithm that relates the temperature response of the probe sensor to time

  3. Oral: In the sublingual pocket of the mouth Rectal: A widely held “gold standard” Axillary: Skin temperature at armpit Common Predictive Thermometry Temperature Sites

  4. Taking An Oral Temperature

  5. Has the patient had a hot or cold drink in the last 20 minutes? This can affect temperature readings (higher or lower) Does the patient smoke? When was the last time he/she smoked (last 20 minutes)? This can affect temperature readings Taking An Oral Temperature PRECAUTIONS

  6. If the patient is unable to breath through the nose during a temperature reading, a “mouth breather” can impact the final temperature reading (lower) The patient should avoid talking during a temperature reading Wait two (2) minutes between temperature readings to avoid the Drawdown effect. 98.6oF is not an absolute value! Taking An Oral Temperature PRECAUTIONS

  7. Make sure the proper probe is being used for the correct site Make sure the probe tip is properly placed Taking An Oral Temperature PRECAUTIONS

  8. Place the probe of the thermometer into either of the two (2) sublingual pockets in the mouth HOLD the thermometer probe in place until the reading has been recorded Taking An Oral Temperature INSTRUCTIONS Siblingual Pockets Thermometer Probe

  9. Does the patient have stool in the rectal cavity. This can impair an accurate reading? Is the patient’s temperature changing rapidly (Rewarming from surgery or during a fever pattern)? Is there proper insertion of the thermometer probe (5 to 8 cm in adults)? Has the thermometer been left in place long enough? Taking A Rectal Temperature PRECAUTIONS

  10. Make sure the proper probe is being used for the correct site Make sure the probe tip is properly placed Taking A Rectal Temperature PRECAUTIONS

  11. Hold the thermometer probe firmly and insert into the patient’s rectum (approximately 5 to 8 cm) Lubricants are not required but can be used HOLD the thermometer probe in place until the reading has been recorded Taking A Rectal Temperature INSTRUCTIONS

  12. Is the thermometer probe properly placed at the apex of the axilla? Is the thermometer probe perpendicular to the floor? Has the thermometer been left in place long enough? Is the patient being exposed to hot/cool air? Is the patient in shock? Taking An Axillary Temperature PRECAUTIONS

  13. Taking An Axillary Temperature INSTRUCTIONS • Place the thermometer probe into the apex of the axilla (armpit) • HOLD the thermometer probe in place in a position that is perpendicular to the floor

  15. How A Regular Thermometer Works 37° C Direct Mode Thermometers work like Glass Thermometers do. They start at room temperature and take several minutes to reach equilibrium. 3-4 MINUTES (DIRECT MODE) The FasTemp goes into direct mode if the patients temperature is below 35,5 ° C deg or if tissue contact is poor. The direct mode will sound a long beep after several minutes when the patient’s temperature is stable. Room Temperature

  16. How FasTemp™ Works 37° C 4-10 SECONDS 35° C • The FasTemp pre-heats to around 35° C degrees and signals a • short “beep” to show that it’s ready. It then begins taking • numerous readings, using a predictive algorithm. Depending • on the patient’s level of perfusion, the algorithm can take • 4-10 seconds before it can predict a final temperature. • A SHORT PREDICTION TIME MAKES • PROBE PLACEMENT A CRITICAL FACTOR! Beep! Room Temp

  17. Filac Advanced Sensing Technology designed to take temperatures with … Speed (4 to 10 seconds) Accuracy (+/- 0.1oC) FasTemp takes a patient’s physiological conditions when determining a temperature FILAC FasTemp

  19. FILAC FasTemp True Isolation Chambers RECTAL ORAL/ AXILLARY NOTE: Chambers located on the back side of the thermometer

  20. FILAC FasTemp Both chambers work on the same thermometer Blue for Oral or Axillary Temps Red for Rectal Temps Completely separate chambers contain Their own probe Probe well Probe cover holder True Isolation Chambers: Probe Well Probe Cover Holder Probe

  21. Reduces cross contamination FasTemp will only take a Rectal Temp when the Red Chamber is attached and only Oral/Axillary temps when the blue chamber is attached FILAC FasTemp True Isolation Chambers: Clinical Benefits

  22. Removing The Isolation Chamber A • Grasp the isolation chamber from behind. Using your index finger on the locking tab (A) and slide unit up to pull off • To replace align rails and slide of new isolation chamber down until locking tab clicks into place

  23. To Change Probes • Pull forward on the top of the connector (A), rotating neck out of its locked position. Slide down to remove. Attach new, matching blue or red probe in reverse manner. Snap neck firmly into place A

  24. Make sure that the FasTemp has a fully charged 9-Volt battery (you never want to demonstrate or in-service a FasTemp with the low battery indicator on) The FasTemp Thermometer will take a temperature in approximately 4-10 seconds (MAKE SURE YOU MAKE THIS CLEAR TO THE CLINICIAN) When taking an oral temperature, eating, drinking, smoking, talking or mouth breathing can affect the patient’s reading (allow at least 5 minutes after any of these activities for a reading) Taking A Temperature Before you begin …

  25. Remove the probe from the probe well and insert the end of the probe into a probe cover located on the back side of the thermometer (isolation chamber) until the cover snaps into place FasTemp: Taking A Temperature ORAL TEMPERATURE READING

  26. Make sure that the cover fits tightly onto the probe). NOTE: ONLY FASTEMP PROBE COVERS CAN BE USED WITH THE FASTEMP THERMOMETER FasTemp: Taking A Temperature ORAL TEMPERATURE READING YES NO

  27. Make sure that the thermometer is is the oral mode (blue isolation chamber). Once you remove the probe from the isolation chamber, an icon will appear on the screen indicating the mode. FasTemp: Taking A Temperature ORAL TEMPERATURE READING Press this button To switch from ORL to AX or AX to ORL NOTE: The ORL or Oral Mode is the default mode of the FasTemp Thermometer

  28. Once the probe cover has been placed securely onto the probe, you must wait for the icon on the screen to indicate that the thermometer is ready to take the temperature ( When the FasTemp is ready, the screen will show a probe cover on the probe icon) – ALSO, WAIT FOR THE “READY” BEEP (SHORT BEEP) FasTemp: Taking A Temperature ORAL TEMPERATURE READING NOT READY READY

  29. Place the thermometer probe into the patient’s mouth. For an accurate reading, the probe MUST be placed into the sublingual pocket of the patient (located under the tongue- either the left or right side) FasTemp: Taking A Temperature ORAL TEMPERATURE READING TEETH TONGUE FRENULUM LINGUAE PROBE SUBLINGUAL POCKETS

  30. Hold the probe in place (in the patient's mouth) for approximately 4 to 10 seconds or until the the final temperature is indicated on the screen – A “long” beep will sound indicating that the temperature reading is complete FasTemp: Taking A Temperature ORAL TEMPERATURE READING Note: Because the temperature probe adapts to the unique conditions of the patient, time to predict an accurate temperature will vary by patient.

  31. Once the temperature is read, discard and eject the probe cover by pressing the white button at the end of the probe Place the probe back into the isolation chamber probe well FasTemp: Taking A Temperature ORAL TEMPERATURE READING

  32. Direct Mode Readings With FasTemp Under certain clinical situations, such as a Hypothermic patient, a predictive trend will provide an inaccurate temperature …

  33. What Is Direct Mode When the thermometer is taking a direct reading of a patient’s temperature (vs. predictive reading) which usually takes approximately 3 minutes …

  34. Direct Mode • In sensing such a situation, FasTemp will automatically shift to: DIRECT MODE (TURTLE ICON WILL APPEAR) • Thus acting as a temperature monitor : RESULTING IN A LONG-TERM TEMPERATURE READING

  35. Have the patient raise the arm, then place the probe tip into the axilla. Press gently to ensure good contact Have the patient lower the arm. Hold the probe perpendicular to the floor If you hear 2 short beeps, it means that the unit has switched to direct mode Taking An Axillary Temperature ARM PROBE FLOOR Perpendicular

  36. In the event that you need to recall the last temperature taken, press the Fo/Co button on the front panel. oF oC Recalling The Last Temperature Taken Fo/Co button NOTE: Withdrawing the probe from the chamber will cancel the last temperature taken from memory

  37. In order to activate the Pulse Timer, simply press the round button on the front panel once. An icon will appear on the screen. Press again to start and press again to stop. A beep will sound after 15 seconds, then 30 seconds. Using The Pulse Timer Pulse Timer NOTE: The probe must be left in the probe well for the Pulse Timer to work properly

  38. Remove the isolation chamber form the back of the thermometer. Remove the soft rubber battery cover. Then pull up on the ribbon to remove the battery. Replace the battery and place the rubber cover back on to the battery compartment.
