  1. Bringing End-of-Life Care Issues to Medical Students Cory Brown George Washington University School of Medicine

  2. Goals • Increase awareness of hospice and End-of-Life care among students • Allow students personal experiences with dying patients • Dispel myths about pain medications and help increase hospice referrals in the future

  3. Lunchtime Lecture Series • Show To Live Until I Die or Wit as preliminary lecture • Arrange speakers for second lecture: oncologists, hospice specialists, terminally-ill patients and their caregivers for a Pearl Panel • Advertise and solicit both lectures at school • Lead lectures, including introduction, Q&A period, etc.

  4. Tuesdays with Morey Project Steps: • Draft letters to oncologists, geriatric docs, and hospices asking for participation and referrals • Prepare training packets for student participants, “Moreys”, and referral sources • Advertise and solicit at school: integrate with lunchtime lectures • Hold lunchtime training session: explain project, outline typical visit, sign-up students and match students with“Moreys” • Hold feedback meeting to share experiences and impressions

  5. Week-long sub-rotation • Prepare sample curriculum: home visits, key lectures, nursing home staffing • Draft proposal with facts about hospice and its importance in health care • Set up appointment with curriculum board for discussion • When approved, find faculty mentor: solicit hospice participation, lecturers, clinical professerships, etc.
