CHF Sumbawanga - Basic Information • The Council has an area of 13,585km2 • Population is 434,084 living in 169 villages. • Number of households is 77,555 • Has no District Hospital • Has 7 public Health Centers and 79 public • dispensaries • 2 Health Centers and 5 dispensaries are • owned by voluntary Agencies. • Health Department has a total of 441 (64%) workers out of 690 required number of health staff CHF best practice WS, Golden Tulip Hotel, DSM

CHF Sumbawanga - CHF Establishment • The Council started to implement CHF in • September 2002. • The Council health service board was established on • 17th/10/2003 and launched on 6th/May/2004 followed • with training conducted last year (2005) • Number of households enrolled in CHF: only 4,483 • (6%) • Trend of enrolment: declining yearly CHF best practice WS, Golden Tulip Hotel, DSM

CHF Sumbawanga - Challenges of low CHF enrolment • The national policy exempts under fives and pregnant • women, who attend health facilities frequently to seek services • Shortages of trained health personnel • Inadequate and irregular drug supplies by MSD to health facilities • The community prefers to pay user fees rather than becoming CHF members because fees are low CHF best practice WS, Golden Tulip Hotel, DSM

CHF Sumbawanga - The way forward • The government to review the policy of exemption for pregnant women and under fives • Council/MOHSW to recruit health personnel • Continuous CHF enrollment sensitization meetings to the community through health facility committee and ward health committee • Multi-sector collaboration on CHF community sensitization • Increase user fees CHF best practice WS, Golden Tulip Hotel, DSM
