What is FIUTS? • Community based non-profit organization • Created in 1948 • Part of the Office of International Education • Largest non-governmental RSO • Mission: At the intersection of the University of Washington, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement in experiences that foster global understanding www.fiuts.org www.fiuts.washington.edu

  4. Orientations • Each year FIUTS Orients: • 800 new international students • 1500 study abroad students

  5. International Student Orientation • Fall 12-day program • 3-day off quarter • Workshops focus on cultural adjustment and tools for daily life • Social activities foster an international community • 50 student volunteers lead the program

  6. Study Abroad Orientation • Day Long Program • Morning general & administrative plenary • Afternoon country breakout sessions led by international students & past study abroad students • 1500 students served; 100 student volunteers

  7. Friendship ProgramsOldest FIUTS program matching community members and new internationals for friendship and cultural exchange. • Hosting: 100-150 international students are hosted in the homes of community members during their 1st week in Seattle • Friendship Connections: provide a community match for friendship

  9. Student Activities • FIUTS is an RSO with 600 members annually • Trips & Tours offer opportunities for students to see the PNW & engage in an international community • Led by the Student Board

  14. CulturalFest offers students an opportunity to share their culture and learn about the world

  17. K-12 Outreach • Global Classroom: International students visit classrooms to enhance curriculum and discuss culture with school children • Pen Pals: Month long email relationship with 4th & 5th graders • Global Teach: Professional Development workshops for K-12 teachers

  19. Pen Pals • When I applied for the pen pal program, I've never expected this feeling. The awkward, but adorable handwriting, their proud chat about family members... all of these little things just reminded me of my tiny little brother... who's in Korea. ~Il Ju, Korea
