  • Born and raised in a small village in the Nether Lands.

  • He was bon March 30, 1853 in Groot Zundert.

  • He was born exactly one year after his parents’ first son, also named Vincent.

His father and grandfather were both protestant clergyman.

Three of his uncles were art dealers.

He was sent to boarding school, he found it a sad, lonely time.

He was not a good pupil .

He was intelligent but not academically.

  • He decided to pursue his art and drew miners and their families.

  • In 1881 his need to paint and draw was beginning to emerge.

  • He painted his room at Arles.

At age 16 he was forced to leave school and get a job because of his families financial problems

He cut off his ear after his argument with Gauguin

He created a painting called Starry Night while he was living at the Asylum.

He made 38 self portraits.

“Portrait of Dr. Gachet” sold for $82.5 million.

Considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt
