  5. 1 IBM BREAKS IMAGE RECOGNITION RECORD Scaling to 256 NVIDIA GPUs with its new distributed deep learning (DLL) library, IBM reports that it has bested previous records set by Google and Facebook on two well-known image recognition workloads. IBM's deep learning approach also allowed it to train a ResNet-101 neural network model in just seven hours by using the power of dozens of servers, using hundreds of NVIDIA GPUs. Microsoft took 10 days to train the same model. Ng, who describes AI as the new electricity on our AI podcast, pointed out how, when electricity was invented, it changed industries from agriculture to healthcare. And now, AI is doing the same. “One thing I look forward to is I think your listeners are listening to this on what may be an electric- powered phone or electric-powered radio, but we don’t even use that term anymore.   8. 4 AI MAKES ONLINE SHOPPING ARTS SMARTER New Jersey startup Jet.com uses AI to optimize the cost of entire shopping carts, rather than simply tallying up the prices of the individual items inside. With the online shopping market forecast to double in 2024 from an estimated $390 billion in 2016, according to Forrester E-Commerce, there’s billions of dollars at stake. Acquired by mega-retailer Walmart last year, Jet reduces costs for baskets of items by assessing a variety of merchants, distributors and shipping costs.   9. 5 COMCAST IMPROVES CONTENT SEARCH AND CUSTOMER SERVICE Comcast is using GPUs and deep learning-powered natural language processing, image recognition, video analysis and other technologies to describe and understand what’s happening on the screen. Comcast’s deep learning software recommends shows and movies and provides personalized menus based on what you’ve watched before. This feature, and the voice remote, are part of Comcast’s interactive Xfinity X1 platform. Comcast is working on AI-powered tools that would automatically understand callers’ queries and route them to the right person.
