  1. HPC TOP 5 STORIES Weekly Insights into the World of High Performance Computing

  2. HPC AND AI HAVE PAVED THE WAY FOR GROUNDBREAKING DISCOVERIES IN SCIENCE, MEDICINE, AND OTHER FIELDS…

  3. PROVING THAT AI IS THE FUTURE OF SUPERCOMPUTING…

  4. TOP 5 HERE ARE THE “TOP FIVE’ STORIES HIGHLIGHTING WHAT’S HOT IN HPC AND AI

  5. TOP 5 1. NVIDIA and Facebook Team Up to Supercharge Caffe2 Deep Learning Framework 2. Delivering AI with Data: The Next Generation of Microsoft’s Data Platform 3. Baidu Deep Learning Service Adds Latest NVIDIA Pascal GPUs 4. Beagle Eyes: Hidden Evolutionary History Uncovered Using GPUs 5. 6. 1 NVIDIA AND FACEBOOK TEAM UP TO SUPERCHARGE CAFFE2 DEEP LEARNING FRAMEWORK NVIDIA and Facebook today announced the result of our joint work to advance artificial intelligence with Caffe2, a new AI deep learning framework contributed by Facebook to the open-source community. Every day, the world generates information — text, pictures, videos and more. Facebook is developing new AI systems to help manage this information so people can better understand the world and more effectively communicate, even as the volume of information increases. Caffe2 allows developers and researchers to create large-scale distributed training scenarios and build machine learning applications for edge devices. BLOG

  7. 2 DELIVERING AI WITH DATA: THE NEXT GENERATION OF MICROSOFT’S DATA PLATFORM In this preview release, we are introducing in-database support for a rich library of machine learning functions, and now for the first time Python support (in addition to R). SQL Server can also leverage NVIDIA GPU-accelerated computing through the Python/R interface to power even the most intensive deep-learning jobs on images, text, and other unstructured data. Developers can implement NVIDIA GPU-accelerated analytics and very sophisticated AI directly in the database server as stored procedures and gain orders of magnitude higher throughput. In addition, developers can use all the rich features of the database management system for concurrency, high-availability, encryption, security, and compliance to build and deploy robust enterprise-grade AI applications. 8. 3 BAIDU DEEP LEARNING SERVICE ADDS LATEST NVIDIA PASCAL GPUS Today Nvidia announced that its deep learning platform is now available as part of Baidu Cloud’s deep learning service, giving enterprise customers instant access to the world’s most adopted AI tools. The new Baidu Cloud offers the latest GPU computing technology, including Pascal- based NVIDIA Tesla P40 GPUs and NVIDIA deep learning software. It provides both training and inference acceleration for open-source deep learning frameworks, such as TensorFlow and PaddlePaddle. “Baidu and NVIDIA are long-time partners in advancing the state of the art in AI,” said Ian Buck, general manager of Accelerated Computing at NVIDIA. “Baidu understands that enterprises need GPU computing to process the massive volumes of data needed for deep learning. Through Baidu Cloud, companies can quickly convert data into insights that lead to breakthrough products and services.” READ MORE

  9. 4 BEAGLE EYES: HIDDEN EVOLUTIONARY HISTORY UNCOVERED USING GPUS The HMS Beagle took naturalist Charles Darwin on a round-the- world journey that helped him unlock ideas about the process of evolution. Almost two centuries later, another BEAGLE is helping scientists unblock bottlenecks in complex genetic data to advance our understanding of the living world, and potentially save lives. This 21st century BEAGLE, which stands for Broad-platform Evolutionary Analysis General Likelihood Evaluator, is an open source library and API using NVIDIA GPUs. The speed with which its software can crunch through data is a critical step in analyzing biological sequence data such as DNA, which carries the genetic material of all living organisms and many viruses, including those that cause AIDS, influenza and Ebola. 10. 5 DUTCH RESEARCHERS BUILD LITTLE GREEN MACHINE II OUT OF IBM MINSKY SERVERS The Little Green Machine II is a four-box IBM Power8 “Minsky” cluster, hosted at Leiden University and developed with the assistance of IBM. Funding of approximately 200,000 Euros was provided by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The system was designed and built by ClusterVision. LGM II has a peak performance just shy of 90 teraflops (double-precision) and is comprised of an IBM Power System head node (the S821LC) and four IBM Power System S822LC for HPC servers, each equipped with two 8-core 3.259GHz POWER8 processors and four NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU, tied together with NVIDIA’s high-speed NVLink interconnect.
