  1. Analyse the conventions, images, camera angles, graphics, mise-en-scene, music and typography to answer the following questions

  2. What conventions of a title sequence are present? This particular movie, Resident Evil, doesn’t include a title sequence. It immediately jumps straight into the storyline. This connotes that the directors intention was to create mystery within the audience. By doing this, it gets the audience intrigued and curious to what events shall follow. The film begins with a close up of a woman’s face. By using a close up, the audience can clearly see she’s confused and doesn’t know what’s going on. Close ups are typical convention used in horror movies to convey emotion, and make the audience feel involved with the actual movie so they’re thrilled. The horror genre mise-en-scene is typically blood, cuts, bruises etc. However, Resident Evil begins with a woman, she seems to have perfect hair/make-up. This connotes to the audience that she could be the innocent victim caught up in all the horror. It gives the audience a slight indication that this woman is not going to look as perfect when the horror events begin to unfold.

  3. How do the titles create a sense of genre? As I mentioned in the previous slide, Resident Evil doesn’t have titles. However, it does include typical the horror genre mise-en-scene. The horror genre, generally, always includes make-up like blood, bruises and cuts etc. The film shows a mid shot of a woman covered in blood, clearly hurt. The director chose to do this shot, to connote to the audience that this movie will involve; blood, pain, destruction and victims. All of the above, are typical conventions of the horror genre. This will then verify to he audience that this film is definitely under the horror genre.

  4. How do the titles hint as to what the narrative might be? • The fact that Resident Evil doesn’t include title connotes that this film contains mystery and confusion. This suggests that the narrative itself will also include mystery, confusion and suspense. Also, as every film normally includes titles it connotes that this film will be unique and completely different to other horror films. The directors intention was to make Resident Evil stand out, be different to the norm so it becomes well known for being different. If this film is well known to be unique, people may take more of an interest in watching this film compared to others.

  5. How might the titles appeal to the target audience? • The fact that Resident Evil is unique and different from other horror movies because it doesn’t have titles appeals to the target audience because it gives them a unique viewing experience. They will be able enjoy a whole new type of horror film. The target audience wont be bored by the ‘typical’ horror film.

  6. How are themes and atmosphere  created through the title sequence? • The sequence begins with a woman , clearly injured, and looking very confused. This presents mystery to the audience, as what’s looked like to be, the main character herself is confused about what’s going on. • As the sequence continues, the woman is seen to be ‘dodging’ danger – this presents a dangerous and suspicious atmosphere as already, even though the film just begun, there is danger. Making the atmosphere very tense and delicate.
