  1. Home • Home is a word that conjures up some of our best thoughts and memories. • It’s a place that where we feel comfortable and a place where we long to go when we are away from it. • For Christians, our home is not here on earth though.

  2. Heavenly Home • Philippians 3:20-21 • “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.” (ESV) • 1 Peter 1:3-4 • “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you…” (ESV)

  3. The Question • Why would anyone want to make heaven their eternal home? • What about heaven should cause us to have a strong desire to be there? • This desire must be strong enough to change the way we live our lives, so we need to know why we want to go.

  4. Our Eternal Home Pettusville Church of Christ Church of Christ at Medina April 13th, 2014

  5. Because of Who is There • What makes your physical home so special? In my case, it is not the beauty of the house, the state in which I live, or the creature comforts that are there. • My physical home is special first because of who is there.

  6. Because of Who is There • Heaven will only be the place that you want to go when you develop a love and longing for God. • Psalm 42:1-2 • “As a deer pants for flowing streams,so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?” (ESV) • Psalm 73:25 • “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.” (ESV)

  7. Because of Who is There • God the Father is in heaven. • Matthew 6:9 – “Our Father in heaven…” • Revelation 21:3 – “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.” (ESV) • Heaven is God’s dwelling place. • Why should we want to be with Him? • John 3:16

  8. Because of Who is There • Jesus the Son, our Savior, is there. • Acts 1:9-11 • And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” (ESV) • Revelation 3:21 • “The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.” (ESV)

  9. Because of Who is There • Jesus the Son, our Savior, is there. • 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 • So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.(2 Corinthians 5:6-8 ESV) • 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 • Why should we want to be with Him? • Romans 5:8: He died for us. • John 17:24: He wants us there.

  10. Because of Who is There • The Holy Spirit is there. • The Holy Angels are there. • Revelation 5:11-13 • The redeemed of all the ages are there. • Hebrews 12:22-23: “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect..” (ESV) • Revelation 21:27: “But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.” (ESV)

  11. Because of What We Will Do There • We will enjoy fellowship with God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, the angels of heaven, and the redeemed of all ages. • We will praise and honor God. • Revelation 4:8-11 • Revelation 5:8-14 • Revelation 7:15

  12. Because of What We Will Do There • We will rest and be rewarded there. • Revelation 14:13: “And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!”” (ESV) • 2 Thessalonians 1:3-10

  13. Because of What We Will Do There • We will have joy and bliss there. • Matthew 25:23: “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” (ESV) • Psalm 16:11: “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fulness of joy.” (NKJV) • Revelation 7:13-17

  14. Because of What Will Not Be There • There will be no more pain, suffering, tears or dying. • Revelation 21:4: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (ESV) • There will be no more temptation. • Revelation 20:10 • Revelation 21:27 • Nothing evil will be there.

  15. Because of How Long we get to Stay • Heaven is an eternal abode for those who enter. • “I’ll exchange my cross for a shining crown where the gates swing outward never.” • It is eternal life. (Matthew 19:29, John 3:16) • It is an everlasting home. (Luke 16:9) • It is an eternal weight of glory. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

  16. Because of How Long we get to Stay • It is an everlasting consolation and good hope. (2 Thessalonians 2:16) • It is eternal glory. (2 Timothy 2:10, 1 Peter 5:10) • It is eternal salvation. (Hebrews 5:8-9) • It is eternal redemption. (Hebrews 9:12) • It is an eternal inheritance. (Hebrews 9:15) • It is an everlasting kingdom. (2 Peter 1:11)

  17. Conclusion • Heaven truly is a wonderful place. It is a place of light, love, and righteousness – all because God is there. • What are you willing to do to get there? • Luke 14:22-27 • Heaven will surely be worth it all!
