  1. Case 1: Linda • 45y/o Female with Bipolar disorder • Divorced • Researcher at Tufts Medical Center • Seen the same therapist for 20 years • Weekly Appointments. • Lack of family support • Strong social media presence

Day in the Life-Saturday • 10 am-Wakes up late, takes medication • 12 pm- Take the metro to TMC • 2 pm- Finishes checking on her mice • 3 pm- Has appointment with therapist • Discussion of mental health reform • Possibility of care centers over private care • 5 pm- Severe anxiety at home, begins searching internet and social networks for information

Case 1 (cont’d) • Primary Concern • Linda has recently heard about possible reform in the mental health care system • Possibility of losing longtime care provider • Severe anxiety about losing this relationship • Needs a trusting source of health care reform • Up to date • Accurate • Address her concerns in particular

  4. Social Media/Website Experience • Looks through mental health twitter accounts • Sees tweet from MMS about health reform news • Uses link to get to the website • Finds information about mental health changes in Massachusetts • Satisfied with website, adds MMS on twitter

  5. Case 2: Jeff • 55 y/o male • Late stage ALS • 17 y/o son • Wife is health care proxy, and doesn’t believe it’s legal or safe • Wife is a consultant

Day in the Life • 8:00 am- Wakes up, takes medications • 10:00 am- Wife accompanies him to doctor’s appointment • See news story in waiting room discussing recent legalization of medical marijuana • Wife asks physician about obtaining a prescription • Physician is not comfortable prescribing • Suggests referral to the pain clinic

Website Experience • 1:00 pm- Wife is upset, thinks this is denial of care • 2:00 pm- Searches the web for a way to report this or find out more • Finds the MMS website • Discovers it is at the physician’s discretion • 3:00 pm- Not satisfied, thinks the MMS is biased against the patient’s best interest • Revision of site to more clearly state the difference between physician discretion and patient’s rights

  8. Case 3: Daniel • Old looking 19 y/o • Homosexual Male • Living in Boston alone • Recently started dating a new boyfriend • Waiter and trying to go back to finish his degree

Day in the Life • 11:00 am- Comes to work late looking distraught • 12:00 pm- Co-worker comments about a bruise and offers Daniel help, but Daniel is embarrassed • 1:00 pm- Co-worker contacts his sister, who is a social worker in Massachusetts. She refers him to the MMS website • Co-worker sends website to Daniel

  10. Website Experience • Daniel visits website • Learns about domestic violence • Finds referrals to patient source • Daniel has a hard time finding the section relevant to him, but is happy with the anonymity • Solution: Make the “Patient Care” button more apparent and further up on the screen

Case 4: Sophia • 36yr M.D. Graduated with honors • Finished cardiology fellowship at MGH • Engaged to be married because she is pregnant and doesn’t want to shame the family so she needs to also find a local job to stay close to her husband to be • Lives with fiance • Has been looking at websites for jobs in the Boston area but she has not been successful • DON’T LET HER LEAVE BOSTON!!!

  12. Day in the Life • 6:00 am- she can’t sleep so she wakes up for some coffee • 8:00 am – turns on the news and she hears the NPR report about the growing MMS organization • 11:00 am – She decides that after watching the news she is going to do on the MMS site because they might have job offerings

  13. Website Experience • Sophia visits website • Learns that there are opportunities to apply for a job position • She wishes that there were more descriptions of the job offerings • Can’t find what she wants or what fits well for her
