  2. What is ICQ? • “I seek you” • an Internet tool that allows the user to: • chat • send messages (sort of like digital post-it notes), files, URL’s, e-mails • play a large number of games online • hold conferences • check to see if friends are online • and much, much more! • has over 2.5 million participants worldwide (you’ll always have someone to chat with!) • system requirements: Win95/NT or Win 3.11 with extensions installed • download the latest free Beta version by accessing Mirabilis’ Homepage at: http://mirabilis.com • (see the on-line help if you are having trouble with the installation) PINP Presentation--ICQ

  3. Brief User's Guide • During installation, the ICQ server will assign you a unique ICQ number which friends will use to access you. • Once you have registered, you can select a list of friends that you would like to communicate with. ICQ will then automatically inform you when one of these friends is online. You can then send them messages, chat with them, etc. by simply left-clicking on their name in the contact list and selecting the appropriate action from the pop-up list. • To open up ICQ, either go through the start menu to find the icon OR right-click on the flower icon in your system tray. Make sure to change your status--see info. on status button on next slide. PINP Presentation--ICQ

  4. Status Button • The little box in the bottom right-hand corner of the ICQ box is called the status button. When you are on-line you should change this from “offline” to whatever status you want other users to see. • “available” and “offline” are self-explanatory (& are the only options in the simple mode) • “Free for chat” allows other users who are looking for a chat partner to see that you want to chat. You will be asked to enter a topic that you are interested in talking about. • “Away”, “N/A”: will show others this status when they send you messages or chat requests. You will still receive all on-line events which will appear as flashing icons next to the senders name. You are also allowed to leave personalized messages for people who are trying to contact you. PINP Presentation--ICQ

  5. “Occupied”--You will only be alerted of messages marked urgent. You may personalize the message other users see. • “Do not disturb”--You will NOT be alerted of incoming messages by sound alerts. May personalize message other users see. • “Privacy”--To other users, you will appear to be offline, but you will still see them. You won’t receive any online events. ICQ Menu Button • When you are comfortable with the basic workings, change the mode to advanced to get more fun stuff to play with. To do this, click the ICQ menu button (bottom left), click advanced features, switch to advanced mode. PINP Presentation--ICQ

  6. Add/Find Users: Allows you to find other ICQ users and add them to your contact list • Future Users Watch: Allows you to enter an e-mail address of a friend, and it will alert you when your friend has signed up for ICQ. Use this in conjunction with “Send ICQ Program To”--see later slides. • Address book: Address book, plus holds personal information on the people along with your own personal notes about them • Add/Change Current User: Allows you to add another user, change to another registered user, add or delete users, publicize your address and existence on ICQ online, and change your personal data that you set up when you registered the program such as: IP address, e-mail address, name, nickname, address, etc. PINP Presentation--ICQ

  7. Security & Privacy: Controls that allow you to ignore other users, allow specified users to see you even when in privacy mode, make yourself invisible to specified users unless you send them an event (chat request, message, etc), change your overall security level, and hide your IP address, plus more. • Preferences: Allows you to change the system colors, change your personalized messages for the status button (see previous slides), insert your e-mail information & server information, set your preferences on chat topics, set your telephone number, and many other preferences. • Windows/Alerts: Allows you to decide if sound should accompany alerts to events and how the ICQ window should appear on your screen. PINP Presentation--ICQ

  8. Sleep Mode: Similar to shutting ICQ off, except that the next time that you become connected to the Internet, ICQ will automatically be launched. System Button • Send ICQ Program To: Allows you to send the ICQ program to someone else by simply specifying their e-mail address. • Send my ICQ PageAddress: Allows you to send your ICQ WWPager Address to someone else. The WWPager allows non-ICQ users to send you an e-mail. • View My ICQ Page: Allows you to see a web-page at Mirabilis that contains information about yourself. PINP Presentation--ICQ

If your preferences are set right, the dialog box with the sent message will pop up on your screen. If you are in a mode which won’t allow this (e.g. DND)or don’t have your preferences set up like this, then all you have to do is click on the yellow post-it note icon next to the person’s name who is sending the message or in the toolbar. • send a file? Either right click on the flower icon in the tool bar and then “check e-mail” OR click on any contact, then “e-mail”, then “check e-mail”. Click on contact and “floating on”. Reverse by “floating off”. PINP Presentation--ICQ

  15. Final Notes This is not meant to be an all inclusive “help manual”. In fact there are many things that have been left out. If you visit the Mirabilis web site you can see all of the advanced features that you can get into, including making a personal web page which Mirabilis places with your user information. ICQ is a fun and user-friendly software package, so don’t be afraid to follow your nose and explore it. Enjoy! PINP Presentation--ICQ
