Our Mission We are committed to develop in our students a passion for life and a love for learning through a holistic and well-balanced education. IB Learner Profile SSIS is an IB world school and although we do not offer the Middle Years Programme as of 2013 we have maintained the goals of the IB Learner Profile in the Primary and Secondary school as we develop internationally minded life long learners who are: Inquirers, Risk Takers, Knowledgeable, Principled, Critical Thinkers, Caring, Communicators, Open Minded, Well balanced, Reflective

  3. Progression at SSIS IGCSE = International General Certificate of Secondary Education IBDP = International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

G7-8 Pre IGCSE Curriculum Grade 7 and 8 consists of content aligned with the IGCSE, which is the curriculum offered in Grade 9 and 10 The English, Maths and Science curriculum has been adapted from the Cambridge Secondary 1 Checkpoint frameworks It is Accelerated Programme which covers the 3 year scope and sequence of these frameworks in 2 years. All subjects are taught in form classes except Chinese which is sett by language ability. It has been designed to fit our local Shanghai context as well as reflecting the needs and international nature of our students and staff. Students study a broad and balanced range of subjects that lays the foundation for future success in the IGCSE Programme.   5. Grade 7 Form Groups Form Groups are formed in consultation involving the Junior School Grade 6 teachers, the Assistant Principal and IGCSE Coordinator. They will be formed according to the following criteria: •  Gender balance • Nationality and ethnicity •  Potential behavioural clashes •  New enrolments • First point of contact for students and parents is the Form Teacher •  Responsible for student welfare •  Friendly face first thing in the morning •  Maintains an overview of student behaviour, progress and target-setting •  Responsible for student administration (sharing information collecting reply slips etc.) •  Presents the Life Skills programme •  Will remain with the Form Group where possible

  6. G7-8: Subject Periods G7-8 Subjects SSIS schedules a five-day timetable with eight periods of lessons each day. Each period has a duration of 45 minutes. English, Chinese, Mathematics and Science are considered Core subjects. All students are encouraged to take part in our comprehensive After School Programme (ASP)

  7. G7-8: Assessment • Change to three terms instead of current four term academic year. • Minimum of two end of topic/unit exams in terms one and two for each subject. • All assessments are designed to assess the prerequisite knowledge and skills required for the IGCSE Programme. • Homework-between 1hr to 1hr 30 minute per night • At the end of term three there will be an end of year examination.

  8. Pre IGCSE and IGCSE Grade Weighting Pre IGCSE and IGCSE Assessment Weighting IGCSE Grading Converting IGCSE grade to GPA Each learner’s performance is benchmarked using eight IGCSE grades, A*-G. IGCSE grades can also be easily converted to US grade weightings and GPA scores.

Senior School Information Morning School and Parent Communication School/Parent Communication • Monthly newsletter from the Principal • Senior School newsletter • Encouraged to use school website for general information • Form teacher is first point of contact • Every subject teacher uses ilearn as an online learning platform and resource. Guest access is open to everyone • Subject teachers will email you if they have concerns • Also email subject teachers if you have queries or would like an up to date report on your childs progress.

  11. Afterschool Programme (ASP) and Extracurriclular Activities • Normally operates between 3.30 and 5.10pm during the weekdays • On weekends, it normally involves Saturday mornings into the early afternoon for specific tournaments in Sport, Model United Nations, Robotics, Performing Arts and Maths. • Wide range of sports and activities including SISAC and CISSA competitions, SSIS Performers, Orchestra, Model Business in Action (MBA), Physics Club, Study Hall, Mathelete, School Council, Mystery Club, Guitar Club etc. • Spring excursions to Hangzhou, Anhui, Shaolin, Three Gorges Dam and Vietnam. • Ongoing community and service projects including Heart to Heart, Roots and Shoots. Guidance and Life Skills Programme • Strong guidance and counseling department • 3 full time counselors • Support different emotional needs of all our all students • Guide students through careers research, IGCSE, IBDP subject selection and university application processes. January- March of G8- Preliminary IGCSE Subject Selection Students choose between 8-10 IGCSE subjects they wish to study for in G9-10 All study fourCompulsory Subjects (5 IGCSE’s) • English First Language or English -Second Language • Chinese First language or Chinese Second Language • Mathematics- • Coordinated Science (2 IGCSES) Can choose up to 4 more optional subjects from • Additional Maths, Triple Science, • Literature, History, Geography, Economics, and Global Perspectives • Business Studies, ICT, Computer Studies, Visual Art, Music, Drama and PE Non IGCSE English Support option Careers Guidance in Life Skills Lessons to support students choosing the correct IGCSE subjects for their chosen career path.

G9-10 IGCSE Programme • Internationally recognised qualifications • Students choose between 8-10 IGCSE subjects • English, Chinese, Maths and Science are compulsory subjects • Choice of higher level maths and science options as well as humanities and creative subjects • All subjects are taught through the medium of English, with the exception of Chinese • At the end of G10, students sit for externally assessed exams in each subject. International Baccaulette Diploma Programme (IBDP) • Academically rigorous pre university curriculum for 16-19 years olds • Prepares students for success at university and life beyond • The programme aims to educate the whole person, helping students to become independent, caring and critical thinkers. • Students study six subjects selected from the subject groups shown to the right • Student must also complete an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Community and Service requirements • SSIS offers both the IB Diploma Programme and the IB Certificate course to students.
