Enhanced services are • Essential, additional or OOH services delivered to a higher specific standard • Services not provided through essential or aditional services • 3 types: • Directed enhanced services – provided by PCT • Locally enhanced services – Locally developed to meet local health needs • Nationally enhanced Services – services to meet local needs, commissioned to national specifications

  3. LES and Cardiff Health Check Protocol • Protocol used to provide health checks to people with learning diabilities • Valuing People (2001) • Government strategy on commitment to improving life chances • Key area was health

  4. LES and Cardiff Health Check Protocol • Estimated 240,000 people with moderate to severe learning difficulties (LD) known to social services in England • Directly enhanced services encourage practices to identify these patients, as defined by the same criteria used by local authority

  5. LES and Cardiff Health Check Protocol • Practices delivering the directly enhanced services will be required to • Setup and agree with PCT a health check Learning Disabilities Register • Aim is to identify registered patients that have LD, and provide annual heath checks.

LES and Cardiff Health Check Protocol • Health care checks need to include: • Provision of relevant health promotion advice • Chronic illness and system enquiry • Physical examination • Consideration of whether pt suffers from epilepsy • Consideration of pt’s behaviour and mental health • Specific syndrome check • Appropriateness of any prescribed medication • Review of co-ordination arrangement with secondary care

  7. LES and Cardiff Health Check Protocol • In carrying out the health checks, the contractor should use either: • Cardiff health check protocol, or • Similar protocol agreed with PCT
