  2. THE SLINKY

  3. 1#( In 1942 a car repair man named George Slinks was fixing a car when suddenly a suspension spring fell from the back wheel. As it moved across the floor the man watched amazed. When he returned home he remembered the suspension spring and the way it flip-flopped. He remembered how amazing the little spring was. He thought and thought and eventually he decided to share his discovery. He and his daughter, Sally began to work on the invention. After many weeks of hard work they finally perfected a long steel ribbon tightly coiled into a spiral. From that spring’s accidental fall came a toy Americans have enjoyed for years: the slinky.)

  4. 2# (In 1943, during World War II, an engineer in the United States Navy was on a new ship’s trial run. As he worked, a torsion spring suddenly fell to the floor. The spring flip-flopped as the ingenious man watched. The navel engineer’s name was Richard James, and when he returned home, he remembered the spring and the interesting way it flopped. James and his wife Betty perfected a long ribbon tightly coiled into a spiral. They began production in 1945. From that spring’s accidental fall came a toy Americans have enjoyed for over forty years: the Slinky.)

  5. The non-electrical, no battery-required, non-video toy has fascinated three generations of children and adults alike. According to one estimate more than two million Slinkys have been sold and the only change has been to crimp the ends as a safety measure. Betty James is now the company president and the Slinky is still hopping, skipping, jumping, and bouncing across floors and down stairs all over America.
