Warmup
Warmup:

  • Fill in table comparing mitosis and meiosis

  • On back, draw picture and write a short description for the following phases

    • Prophase I

    • Telophase I

    • Telophase II

What is the result of each of these phases? What important events occur in each?

Chromosomes
Chromosomes

  • Every “normal” person has 46 chromosomes

  • Or 23 pair of chromosomes

  • 23 from each parent

Chromosomes cont
Chromosomes cont…

  • So that when you look at one person’s entire Karyotype (chromosomes) they have 46 total.

Genetics and chromosomes
Genetics and chromosomes

  • Chromosomes are what carry the alleles in DNA

  • Each chromosome has an allele on it, and a matching one on its homologous pair.

  • This is why we have two alleles for every trait

  • This is why this person’s alleles are Aa for a certain trait. And the dominant trait (A) will be expressed

Sex linked traits
Sex-linked traits

  • Of the twenty three pairs of chromosomes, 22 of them are the same whether you are male or female. (autosomes)

  • The 23rd pair is known as the sex chromosomes

Sex chromosomes

For Woman they have XX

For men, it is XY
