  2. Background • Millions of cubic meters of timber, costing millions of dollars, are used in relief and reconstruction programmes. • However, very little practical advice on timber use and procurement is at present available to the humanitarian community …/…

Background (2) • By publishing this Scoping Study, OCHA hopes to achieve a first step towards: • raising the awareness of field, logistics and procurement staff as to basic concepts, sources of info and best practises, • increasing the efficiency of this aspect of relief activity, • increasing the benefit to disaster victims

  4. Background (3) • Inter-Agency process: • OCHA • NRC accepted to share its internal guidelines, • Oxfam printed the first set of paper version • IFRC will cooperate for phase II Other interested partners are welcome

  5. End 2007 ? FINAL Phase I Scoping Study + Draft 1 Comments by email by end of June 2007 Phase II International meeting in Autumn (t.b.c.) Draft 2 2d round of comments

  6. WHAT will the final guidelines cover? Timeliness of importations Storage considerations Variability of species and grades Environmental considerations Political issues Local construction techniques and knowledge
