It met with theasteroid called Itokawa in mid-September 2005. Hayabusa was not designed to land but it was to simply touch the surface. Hayabusa did land and sit on the asteroid surface for about 30 minutes in November 2005. The spacecraft was scheduled to fire its engines to begin its cruise back to the Earth. However, this was delayed due to some problems.
