  2. Quarantine • The Australian Government Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has a specific and important role to play in the protection of the health and welfare of Australia’s people, environment and agricultural industry. • The functions of DAFF can be divided into two main areas: • quarantine inspection of international passengers, cargo, mail, animals, plants and animal and plant products arriving in Australia • the inspection and certification for a range of agricultural products exported from Australia

  3. Quarantine • Some of the functions for imports employed by DAFF include: • inspecting imported foods; • screening flights, passengers, baggage, cargo and mail; • monitoring reports about the health status of passengers arriving in Australia; • inspecting imported plants, animals and plant and animal products; • isolating imported plants and animals at quarantine stations to ensure they are free of disease; • administering regulatory processes designed to protect against the entry of pests, weeds or diseases; and • reacting to the outbreak of introduced pests, weeds or disease

  4. Quarantine • The main quarantine risks and sources of contaminants associated with containers are: • Soil • Plant products • Animals • Animal products • A range of pests that pose a serious quarantine risk can infest untreated timber and timber products • The presence of bark in containers is a major quarantine concern • Other packing materials of plant origin such as straw, rice hulls and similar products must not be present in containers

  5. Quarantine • Imported goods not subject to quarantine includes all imported goods where the nature of the goods themselves do not pose a biosecurity risk. There are no specific quarantine requirements for the importation of this category of goods. • DAFF has identified a large number of different imported goods that may pose a biosecurity risk, and has developed special requirements and procedures for these goods • The details of goods subject to quarantine and are included on the DAFF Import Conditions (ICON) database

  6. Quarantine • Exporters of prescribed goods should be familiar with the general requirements of prescribed goods as well as the requirements for specific products.
