  1. Is Yeast Alive? Explain why something is considered living or non-living using the characteristics of life.

  2. What Do You Think? NO! Yeast is not a living thing YES! Yeast is a living thing

  3. Does yeast have a genetic code? • The complete genome of yeast was sequenced and published in 1996.

  4. Can yeast grow and develop? • Yeast has a cell cycle just like other cells do.

  5. Can yeast respond to their environment? • Yeast have Thermal Shock Proteins • These proteins help to protect yeast from extreme temperatures. • Yeast also exchange nutrients and waste.

  6. Can yeast reproduce? • Yeast reproduces through a process called budding. • Under ideal conditions yeast will reproduce every 2-3 hours.

  7. Can yeast maintain a stable internal environment? • Yeast is composed of structured, ordered parts. • Stress proteins allow yeast to maintain homeostasis • Example: Increase of salt content

  8. Can yeast get and use materials and energy? • In the lab, we provide yeast energy by using table sugar (sucrose). • In commercial production of yeast, beet and cane molasses are used. Sucrose 3D Model

  9. Is yeast made of cells? • Yeast is a single-celled organism • Remember all living things are made up of at least one cell, but can also contain millions more. • Yeast cells have a cell wall which provides a boundary from the outside environment.

  10. Can yeast evolve? • There are many different types of yeast, but the commercial one used by bakers is called Saccharomycescerevisae

  11. What Do You Think? NO! Yeast is not a living thing YES! Yeast is a living thing

  12. What do we use yeast for? • Bread • Beer • Yeast creates alcohol and carbonation • Genetic Studies • Model organism to study • Bio-fuel production?
