  5. Short history of cell phones: What a short, strange trip it has been? 1980s – industry born – simple phone service for wealthy. Devices size of a brick. 1990-1998 – standardization of networks and SIMs, standards for cross network communication and billing. 1999 – first MVNOs appear, beginning the lowering of cost. 2004 – end of ‘walled garden’; start of access to Internet. 2008 – independent software developers enter market for apps. 2009 – open to social networking sites. 2011 – operators ready for micro-payments via phone. Size, growth and capabilities • Total mobile subscriptions hit five billion in July of 2010. 4.6B are simple, non-smart phones. • Consider cell phone use in these three countries: • US: 281M in use, 91% penetration • China: 832M in use, 61% penetration • Nigeria: 76M in use, 50% penetration • The ‘smart phone’ market is exploding. Today’s smart phone would have been owned only by the CIA in five years ago. • What if I have disability?
