  1. The Context of ‘Lord of The Flies’ WALT Understand the historical backdrop of the novel.

  2. Starter Working alone; list as many things as you can which you know happened between 1939 and 1960.

  3. Task The name "Lord of the Flies" is a literal translation of Beelzebub. Beelzebub = A name for the Devil. Given this knowledge – Brainstorm what the THEMES of the novel might be… E.g. The THEMES of Romeo and Juliet are Fate, Romance, Conflict.

  13. Task • Read Chapter 1, The Sound of the Shell. • Remember you can use your exercise book to make notes you think might be useful. E.g. Character descriptions etc. • You can be noting down the page numbers of any key quotes you think we come across.

  14. Task Complete the task on the worksheet now being handed out. Complete the task in your books, being careful with presentation and spelling.

Higher Level Thinking Early in the chapter Piggy asks, “aren’t there any grown-ups at all?” (p. 2) then later says “Nobody don’t know we’re here” (p. 9) whilst Ralph says, “No grown-ups!” (p. 2). Based on what you know so far, discuss how successful Golding is at presenting opposing views of being on the island. Try and use PEEL to answer this question.

Why does Jack treat Piggy the way he does? 6. Do you think Jack’s attitude towards Piggy will influence the rest of the group? Why or why not? 7. After the boys light the fire, what does Piggy point out to them? How do you think the rest of the boys feel at this point? 8. Who is missing? Whose fault is it? 9. What do you think the fire is a symbol of at the end of the story?
