  3. Physical Geography Highlands in West and Southwest. Arid in central, semiarid northern central. Humid Continental in northeast (including north Japan, North Korea, and Northeast China). Humid subtropical in East/Southeast China.

  4. Physical Geography Desert and desert scrub in the northwest and west. Mixed forest in northeast. Deciduous forest in east.

  5. Human Geography • Chinese Civilization • Early Empires dominated societies. • One of the earliest civilizations. • Birth place of Confucianism and Daoism • Helped spread Buddhism.

  6. Human Geography • Lots of European colonization: • 1800s • Britain, United States, and other industrial European nations force China and Japan to open up their borders to trade • East Asians try to resist • Europeans and Americans have overwhelming military power

  7. Human Geography Very densely populated in east and in Japan. Sparsely populated in west and north. Hydroelectric power is used throughout Asia (Three Gorges Dam). Coal are large exports.
