  1. Fluorine substituents reduce charge recombination and drive morphology development in polymer solar cellsWei You, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, DMR 0954280 We designed a series of polymers to further investigate the fundamental reason behind the peculiar behavior of these fluorine substituents, as we discovered earlier that these fluorine substitutions lead to highly efficient polymer solar cells. We further developed the chemistry of alkylated thienothiazole (TTz) with much higher yield than what we reported before (highlighted by Synlett and quickly adopted by the Mario Leclerc and Luping Yu’s group). Further, we compared the photovoltaic properties of related polymers (TT vs. TTz). We contributed two invited review papers that help the field with our very own inspirational perspectives. We also synthesized a few new polymers with interesting properties for photovoltaics Fluorine Concentration (DTBT, DTfBT, DTffBT) and Device Thickness (100nm,150nm, 200nm) are varied and their effect on (a) Voc, (b) Jsc, (c) FF and (d) η are shown. Thickness measurements are +/- 10 nm.

Outreach to K-12 Students and Teachers, as well as to the General PublicWei You, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, DMR-0954280 • The PI and graduate students participated in the Climate LEAP program in summer 2012 (three times). High school students and teachers toured the PI’s lab, and received education • The PI successfully finished the first round of a new initiative to re-structure the course of Polymer Chemistry with updated contents to incorporate most relevant research results, in order to provide better education to our students. In Fall 2011, the PI taught the updated course through a collaboration with USTC in China, via live video conferencing. The PI will continue this practice in Fall 2012. • The PI and his graduate students participated in various outreach activities, such as UNC Science Expo and NC sciences Olympiad. 1. Revamping Polymer Chemistry at Carolina: An International Collaborative Teaching, with four faculty members from UNC and four faculty members from USTC (our partner China university). A huge success!
