  1. Making a successful transition to Common Core Math Roz Auerbach August 2013

  2. "If people just swap out the old standards and put the new CCSS in the old boxes –into old systems and procedures –into the old relationships –Into old instructional materials formats –Into old assessment tools, Then nothing will change and perhaps nothing will." Phil Daro– chairman of the mathematics work group for Common Core Standards and lead writer for the Mathematics K-12 Common Core Standards Committee

  3. "If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." (Ignacio Estrada)  You can forget facts, but you cannot forget understanding. (Harvard Professor Eric Mazur)

  4. Common Core represents new Challenges in Mathematics Instruction

  5. This is not a new name for the same old thing!

  6. Today’s Presentation • Will give you a very short preview of the full day workshop. • 3 Specific resources will be explored • The full day gives teachers access to my full web site which will be an important resource for them throughout the school year.

  7. Common Core Standards for Mathematics Two Types of Standards Mathematical Practice (recurring throughout the grades) Mathematical Content (different at each grade level)

  8. Standards for Mathematical Practices The full day workshop provides teachers with several different resources to help them and their students develop a working understanding of the specifics of the mathematical practice standards. Standards for Mathematical Practices

  9. Mathematics of Content: 3 shifts Focus: Focus strongly where the standards focus. Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application

  10. Required Changes • These standards require students to develop skills for mathematical thinking that apply to all strands and grade levels • Need to effect a change in delivery of content to provide for more independent and group problem solving activities • These can and should be done with and without technology.

  11. Shift One • Significantly narrows the scope of content in each grade level and changes how time and energy is spent within the math classroom to provide a wider variety of experiences • Focus deeply only on what is emphasized in the standards, so that students gain strong foundations

  12. Shift Two Coherence • Carefully connect the learning within and across grades so that students can build new understanding onto foundations built in previous years. • Begin to count on solid conceptual understanding of core content and build on it. Each standard is not a new event, but an extension of previous learning.

  13. Shift Three Rigor • The CCSM require a balance of: • Solid conceptual understanding • Procedural skill and fluency • Application of skills in problem solving situations Rigor and Relevance • This requires equal intensity in time, activities, and resources in pursuit of all three

  14. Full day workshop will: • Help teachers understand the progression of skills from K- to HS • Improve their knowledge of the mathematical content for their grade level and get an in-depth understanding of what students need to know for each standard • Provide links to prototype problems so that teachers and students will be able understand and prepare for the format and challenge of the new types of assessments.

  15. Provide links to resources to develop teaching materials for their current grade levels as well as fill-in the gaps of concepts not learned from previous levels. • Provide links to a wide variety of ready to use videos, simulations, problem solving and interactive web sites

  16. Resource #1 • Will highlight what teachers need to know about the common core content for any grade level (K-HS) • Flipbooks explain each and every standard • Specific content students need to know • Specific teaching examples to use

  17. #2 Will give you and your students a beginning understanding of new CC assessments • Try the sample assessments provided by PAARC

  18. Challenges for all Levels • Not all students have come up through the grades exposed to the common core curriculum and therefore may not have mastered the skills from previous grade levels. • It will probably be necessary to review and “reteach” many concepts.

  19. #3 Learnzillion.com free videos • Totally aligned to each skill at each grade level LA and Math (3-HS) • *major project this summer to add more resources • Short – concise - effective • Has interactive practice problems. • Great for special-education or for reviewing skills introduced at previous levels.

  20. Can be used for whole class instruction, independent study or differentiated instruction. • Can be assigned for homework if students have home computers. • Great for use in a “flipped classroom”. • Can be given to parents who want to help students at home. • Works on all computers and tablets.

  21. The full day workshop gives teachers access to my full web site • Extensive set of links • One place to go for all common core math needs • Exceptional resource that will be used throughout the school year.
