  2. Corporate Social Responsibility • Definition Concept where companies must actively pursue issues concerning the environment and other social issues, such as: • Corporate ethics • Compliance to laws and regulations • Labor issues • Environmental protection • Human rights • Consumer protection

Background to CSR • Increased scrutiny because of: • Corporate scandals • Quality control issues • Leakage of personal information • Corporate mismanagement • Globalization of companies • Growth of information technology • Information can be conveyed instantaneously • Corporate action will be condemned by NGOs

  4. International Organization for Standardization (ISO 26000) • This standard offers guidelines on socially responsible behaviors and possible actions. • Japanese corporations must respect these standards

  5. Supply-Chain Management • CSR involves the entire supply-chain of the world, e.g., distributors and vendors. • CSR provisions must be included in all transactions. • Theme of CSR must involve all the stakeholders in the company.

  6. Group Activity TASK You and your group are the leaders of a large corporation and have been called upon to change your companies focus to one of social responsibility. • Develop a Mission Statement that describes your companies goals. • Statements must include at least three specific goals related to social responsibility. • Be prepared to present your Mission Statements to the class.
