  1. HOW TO BOIL WATER -a chemical approach You have been stranded in an abandoned ghost town that once housed a chemical factory. Having been there for three days, you have run out of supplies and desperately need drinking water. While wandering endlessly around, you notice a door open to the vacant factory. Inside you find a plethora of water containers. Knowing the water needs to be boiled first, you search the factory for a heat source. You hit the jackpot…a cabinet containing various hydrocarbons! But you must decide which will be the most efficient because you don’t know how long you are going to be stranded here and want to boil 100g of water at a time to ration the water. Ah, you recall freshman chemistry class and know that you need to calculate how much energy each hydrocarbon will give off when combusted.
