  5. GREENHOUSE EFFECT This term applied to the role the atmosphere plays in the heating of the terrestrial surface. The atmosphere is practically transparent to the solar short wave radiation which is absorbed by the terrestrial surface. A great part of this radiation is emitted back to space, but then reflected back again by gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, halocarbons and the ozone, present in the atmosphere. This heating effect is the base of the theories related with the global heating . The content of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing by 0,4% every year as consequence of the use of fossil fuels like petroleum, gas and coal; and the destruction of tropical forests.

  6. GREENHOUSE EFFECT

  7. The concentration of other gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect as methane and chlorofluorocarbons, is increasing still faster. The final effect of these increments could be a global increasing of the temperature, estimated in 2 to 60 C in the next 100 years. A heating of this magnitude would alter the climate in the entire world, it would affect crops and increase the sea level significantly. СО2 is the most important greenhouse effect gas resulting of human activity. During the last 200 years, the concentration ofСО2 has risen sharply. The increment in the quality of СО2 in the atmosphere has contributed up to 70% of the greenhouse effect due to human activity.

  8. Although greenhouse gases are a global problem, they don't have global origin. 95% of the industrial emissions of СО2 are produced in the northern atmosphere, which is dominated by industrial countries.Another important cause for the increment of the concentration of СО2 is the change of use given to the land. The vegetation and the ground in forest areas retain between 20 and 100 times more carbon per area unit than the agricultural systems. When the forests are cleared away for agriculture or cattle raising, a great part of this carbon is liberated into the atmosphere. It is possible to revert the loss of carbon preserving the forests, and by this way recapture the СО2 of the atmosphere . This system, generally known as carbon capture, could significantly contribute to reduce the global warming.

  9. ANSWER THE QUESTIONS How does the greenhouse effect works? What gases are responsible for the greenhouse effect? What contributes to the increase of the greenhouse gases emission? What are the predictions about the increase in world temperatures in the next 100 years? Which parts of the world are the most responsible for the global heating? What is understood by “carbon capture”?
