College of Science and Mathematics College of Science and Mathematics – Dr. Lynn Little, Dean • Staffing: • 45 FT faculty, 2 HT faculty, 1 chemical stockroom manager, 1 machinist technician, 5 secretaries, 1 dean’s assistant, 1 dean • Fund raising: carried out at the departmental level • Student activities: participation in all-campus events • Needs: - Expansion of McCoy Hall; IT upgrades in Bolin Hall • Ceiling mounted projector and podium in BO 215 – $25,000 • Ceiling mounted projector and podium in BO 309 – $25,000 • Ceiling mounted projector and podium in BO 314 – $25,000 • Wireless capability needed throughout Bolin Hall – $$$$

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Biology – Distinctions -UGROW: Undergraduate Research Opportunities and Summer Workshops -2005: Begun by Dr. Magaly Rincon-Zachary with 4 students and 4 faculty members of the College of Science and Mathematics - 2012: 18 students (from 45 applicants) and 25 MSU faculty members from across the campus - 2013: Dr. Rincon-Zachary has been appointed Director of Undergraduate Research for MSU - 2013: EURECA (MSU’s QEP) extends faculty-mentored research to undergraduate students from across the campus, year-round

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Biology – Distinctions - Dalquest Desert Research Station - 1968: Dr. Walter Dalquest, MSU professor (1952- 1984) (died 2000) purchased 2 sections (1280 acres = 2 sq. mi.) of rugged West Texas canyon land north of and adjoining the Big Bend Ranch State Park - 1996: Walter and Rose Dalquest donated the site to MSU for research - 2004: Rose Dalquest donated an adjacent 2-2/3 sections (1708 acres), bringing the total to 3,000 acres of pristine Chihuahuan Desert - Faculty members and students research biodiversity, ecology, paleontology, and geology of this native desert, year-round - A freshwater well recently has been dug, and plans are underway to build a permanent, enclosed research station with lodging and labs

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Biology– Dr. Bill Cook, Chair • Staffing: • 7 FT faculty, 2 HT faculty, 1 secretary • Student activity: Texas Academy of Science - students present their research findings, observe others’ research talks, and network • Needs: - Wide-range sensor network for use at DDRS – $14,000 • 3 FlexCams for projection of microscope images – $2,697 • Phototube head & digital camera for microscopes – $2,015 • 4 Physiographs w/ laptops for physiology labs – $31,252 • Fluorescent microscope with high speed camera – $78,676

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Biology– Dr. Bill Cook, Chair • Needs: - Dissecting microscopes (20 @ $2,000 ea) – $40,000 existing microscopes are old and of poor quality - 5 Student-grade PCR machines – $20,000 - $25,000 will enable students to perform cutting-edge genetic analyses • Mastergradient PCR thermocycler – $8,079 current technology does not permit multiple programs to be run • Nanodrop spectrophotometer to measure DNA – $9,570 current technology wastes precious small quantities of DNA • Spirometers (7 @ $660 ea) – $4,620 high volume of students is using only two out-dated instruments

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Chemistry, Geosciences, and Physics – Distinctions - Chemistry - Accredited by the American Chemical Society - All tenure-track faculty have their own research labs and have directed undergraduate student research involving most Chemistry majors over the past 29 years - This activity has been continuously funded throughout this period by the Robert A. Welch Foundation ($30,000/year)

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Chemistry, Geosciences, and Physics – Distinctions - Geosciences - The Geosciences Program receives funds from a number of donors in the local oil and gas industry, which has led to the establishment of a concentration in petroleum geology -This includes a distinguished professorship, effective Fall 2013, and substantial financial support

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Chemistry, Geosciences, and Physics – Distinctions -Physics - Physics Program graduates have one of the highest rates for placement in graduate programs - Efforts are underway to offer a BS degree in Physics through the Texas Physics Consortium to leverage advanced course offerings from across the State

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Chemistry, Geosciences, and Physics – Dr. Rodney Cate, Chair • Staffing: • Chemistry – 5 FT faculty, 1 chemical stock rm. mgr., 1 secretary • Geosciences – 3 FT faculty • Physics – 2 FT faculty • Student activities: - ACS student members host an annual Chemistry Carnival for 4th -6th graders from the Boys & Girls Club featuring demonstrations and “hands-on” group projects - ACS students also participate in the Bowie ISD Science Carnival

Lab Equipment – $28,800 – Computerized data acquisition and analysis tools are needed for improved pedagogy - Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer – $25,000 – Current GCMS computer controller is obsolete and not covered by mfr. - Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer – $150,000 – LCMS is needed for student training and graduate competitiveness

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Chemistry, Geosciences, and Physics – Dr. Rodney Cate, Chair • Geosciences Needs: - Lab space and equipment upgrades in Petroleum Geology – Petroleum Geology emphasis to begin in academic year 2013-14 - Environmental software capability upgrades – $5,000 – Students need industry-standard tools for graduate competitiveness - Dalquest field camp support – $9,000 – Dalquest development as a field camp for graduates will necessitate equipment and housing

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Chemistry, Geosciences, and Physics – Dr. Rodney Cate, Chair • Physics Needs: - Service-level laboratory space and equipment expansion – Space needs plus $17,000 for new equipment – Demand for support of the growing engineering program necessitates an expansion of entry-level physics laboratories - Equipment needs to support advanced lab courses – $7,200 – Lecture courses for the Texas Physics Consortium will be taught online, but labs must be taught on campus

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Computer Science – Distinctions - Active participation in student research and development - ACM Regional Programming Contest – MSUstudents compete against 40 universities in the south-central region - North Texas Area Student Conference – MSU students and students from other universities present their research - Math, Science & U Conference – Jr. High girls and their teachers attend a full day of activities given by female MSU faculty: mathematicians, computer scientists, etc. - Computer Science & Mathematics BBQ – Annual student academic awards dinner for students in these two depts.

Halverson, Chair • Staffing: 8 FT faculty, 1 secretary • Fund raising: Selling of used textbooks to a book vendor • Student activities: Host several conferences for students • Needs: - Convert BO119/120 into computer science teaching lab - $85,000 - Add the following funded items to the budget - ACM Regional Programming Contest - $1,250 - North Texas Area Student Conference - $2,000 - Math, Science & U Conference for Jr. High Students - $3,000

Halverson, Chair • Needs: - Printer for BO 119 lab (replacement for dying printer) – $1,813 - 3 programmable robots for use in programming classes – $3,597 - Lectern for BO 320 (current lectern is outmoded) – $2,359 - Hardware for NT Regional Plan. Comm. research – $1,315 - 2 iPads for research and student support – $1,000 - 5 Mac computers for teaching iPhone apps course – $10,000 - Podium, computer, and projector for BO 312 – $6,000

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Mechanical Engineering – Dr. Sheldon Wang, Chair • Needs: Space and funding • Building Expansion: McCoy Engineering Hall is slated for an addition of labs, a conference room, and office space, to occur before the beginning of Fall 2013 classes • Funding: The department is nearing a three-year matching commitment for petroleum emphasis, for $750,000 (of which $350,000 already is available to be matched)

College of Science and Mathematics Department of Mechanical Engineering – Dr. Sheldon Wang, Chair • Costs for ABET Accreditation: Site visit slated for Spring 2014 • Fees – $3,660 base fee 660 fee for one accredited program 3,000 fee for first evaluator (team leader) visit 3,000 fee for second evaluator visit $10,320 total fees • Travel and Lodging for two evaluators, 2-1/2 days – $2,500 • Pre-onsite review trip to ABET by ME Chairman – $1,250 • Total anticipated cost of ABET accreditation– $14,070
