Getting Started… • Concept submittal – many sources internal and external to NSF • “Due diligence” – what standards already exist, who are the key stakeholders, market drivers, consistency with overall NSF mission • Call for stakeholders – PINS filing, media releases, trade shows/conferences, current contacts, and partner organizations (this project would require new Joint Committee formation)

  3. Forming a Joint Committee • Solicit applications from interested stakeholders (voting membership only) • Chair for Joint Committee is indentified by NSF (from CPHC or stakeholder pool) • Chair appoints voting members from pool of applicants with balance and range of stakeholder interests in mind (compliance with ANSI balance requirements, additional outreach may be needed) • Rolling, ongoing process

Overview of NSF Standards Process NSF notifies ANSI, Public Notification in Standards Action Stakeholder Drafting Process ANSI Public Comment Notification in Standards Action Joint Committee and TC Review and Ballot CPHC Review and Ballot ANSI Adoption Announcement Notification in Standards Action

  5. Role of CPHC • Advisory body to NSF on standards development and organizational programming • Not a consensus body, but reflect a segment of NSF Joint Committees • Three voting groups – Water, Food, and Sustainability and Health • JC Chair is a member of CPHC (liaison role) • Opportunity to share information about project with CPHC during development phase

  6. Role of NSF Staff • Responsible for the following: • Compliance with NSF and ANSI procedural requirements (process, documentation, etc.) • Meeting and project facilitation (with Joint Committee Chair, or external facilitator) • Administrative support (meeting logistics, agendas, and summaries, document distribution, roster maintenance, etc.) • Other special needs – lab projects, research, etc.
