  1. What can we see in the night sky?

  2. Astronomy • the study of what is beyond the Earth.

  3. The Universe • is everything that exists, including all matter and energy everywhere

  4. Galaxies • Rotating collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars, planets, and other celestial objects

  5. Stars (Luminous) • matter that emits huge amounts of energy (heat and light). • appear to twinkle • appear as part of a constellation

  6. Constellations • groups of stars that seem to form shapes or patterns • many are named after animals, therefore called zodiac constellations

  7. Nonluminous Objects • objects that do not emit their own light • Like planets and moons. • we see them only when the sunlight reflects off them. Earth Sun

  8. The Solar System • the Sun and all the objects that travel around it, including the 8 known planets, the moons of those planets and some panetoids. Not a planet any more

  9. Planets • matter, generally spherical, that revolves around a star. • wander through the constellations, therefore were called “wandering stars” by the Greeks.

  10. Moons • Are satellites (celestial objects that travel around a planet)
