Objectives • The purpose of this module is to familiarize students with the American English fricative system. • By the end of the module, students should be able to identify the different types of fricatives and be able to recognize their sounds ins different words.
Introduction • When we use the term “fricative,” we are referring to the presence of friction. This means that although the air is able to escape the mouth, it does so by scraping against something, which alters its sound. This could be your teeth, tongue, or even your lips!
What is a Fricative? • A fricative sound is one that is produced in the mouth with some type of friction. They are sounds in which the airstream is not totally stopped but is obstructed to a narrow area, causing friction. Pronounce an s or f and notice the friction in the sound.
Types of Fricatives • [s] = as in see, pistol • [z] = as in busy, zoo • [f] = as in first, cuff • [v] = as in very, beaver • th [θ] = as in think, with • th [ð] = as in weather, bother • sh [š] = as in shoe, wish • zh [ž] = as in measure, vision
