School-Wide Discipline Plan Jaguar P.R.I.D.E • 1stOffense……verbal warning • 2nd Offense……10 minute time out and completion of a reflection sheet • 3rd Offense……teacher-student conference • 4th Offense…….parent contact • 5th Offense……written referral to guidance counselor • 6thOffense…….administrative conference • 7th Offense…… PS74 NOTE:6th Grade is a middle school grade and works under a rigorous curriculum that requires complete focus. Consistent behavior issues that prevent oneself or others from daily learning may result in serious consequences in addition to those noted above. Any act of gross misconduct will warrant an automatic PS74.

School Uniform Policy • Rosaryville Elementary is a uniform school, as voted on by the PTO • Appropriate school uniform is to be worn each day, unless school administration decides otherwise • Uniform shirts should be tucked in at all times • Sweaters or jackets should be solid white or navy blue • Any student not following uniform policy will be issued a demerit for each offense

Composition/Spiral Notebooks – for class journals (5) Pocket Folders (2) Loose-leaf paper 3 #2 sharpened pencils – DAILY (no mechanical) 2 blue or black ink pens, preferably erasable Pencil pouch Crayons or colored pencils Glue sticks (2) Scissors In order to avoid any conflict of supply ownership, it is highly suggested that the student’s name be placed on all his/her supplies. Textbooks • MATH: Holt Big Ideas Math (www.bigideas.com)“Green Book”; McDougal Littell Math Course 1 2007 (strictly online text for 1st 6 weeks) • READING: Holt McDougal Literature 2012; Wordly Wise vocabulary (www.wordlywise.com) • SCIENCE: Prentice Hall Science Explorer (www.PHSchool.com) • SOCIAL STUDIES: Prentice Hall World Studies (www.PHSchool.com) • HEALTH: Scott Foresman Total Health - All textbooks should be covered. - All textbooks, except for Health are available online. - All access codes and online textbook information will be sent home within the first week of school.

  8. Homework Policy • Homework is assigned every night of the school week. • Homework should be complete, neat, and include the proper heading before it is submitted. Proper Paper Heading Student Name Date Subject Assignment Title (Page #) • Homework assignments are previewed and listed daily in the classroom • The policy of the 6th Grade team is to accept no late homework for credit, with the exception of excused absences.

  9. Reading/Language Arts First Quarter Objectives: Students will be introduced to six (6) reading strategies in order to practice routines and procedures for a readers workshop environment. Six Reading Strategies: Monitor & Comprehension Activate & Connect Ask Questions Infer Meaning Determine Importance Summarize & Synthesize Pressed & Ready for Reading!

READING – 1st Quarter Glance Introduction to Reading Strategy Instruction • Establish rituals & routines of a workshop classroom including classroom libraries, Reader’s notebooks, independent reading, and brief constructed responses/reading reflections • Introduction to reading strategy instruction with a model lesson of each of the six strategies from Strategies that Work. • Introduction to Literature Circles Poetry • Students are introduced to the phases of the writing process and the use of writing journals. Students will read thematically linked poems, examine elements of poetry, and develop responses to poetry that include analysis and evaluation of texts. In addition, students may create an original poetry book based on the following themes: • Grade 6: Who I Was

  11. Reading/Language Arts First Quarter cont’d • Strategy Focus: Back to School – Monitor Comprehension Unit1: Non-Fiction – Activate/Connect, Question. Unit 2: Fiction – Infer Meaning • Comprehension Skill: Text Features, Paraphrasing, Main Idea •  Grammar Skill: Kinds of Sentences, Conjunctions, Singular & Plural Nouns •  Word Work: Using a Thesaurus, Dictionary Guide Words, Dictionary Definitions • Students will have weekly spelling words and homework. Spelling Tests will take place at the end of each week. • Students will read 30 minutes or more daily and complete reading logs that will be collected and graded every week. • Students will be required to complete bi-monthly book reports.

Mathematics – 1st Quarter Glance Knowledge of Geometry • Identify, describe, and label points, lines, rays, line segments, vertices, angles, and planes using correct symbolic notation • Draw geometric figures using a variety of tools • Identify or describe angle relationships • Identify and describe line segments • Compare and classify triangles by sides and by angle measure • Determine a third angle measure of a triangle given two angle measures Knowledge of Statistics • Organize and display data to make frequency tables • Interpret frequency tables • Read and analyze circle graphs • Organize and display data to make stem and leaf plots • Apply measures of central tendency Knowledge of Algebra, Patterns, and Functions • Evaluate numeric expressions using the order of operations Knowledge of Number Relationships and Computation • Determine prime factorization for whole numbers and express them using exponential form • Compare and order fractions, decimals, alone or mixed together with and without relational symbols (<, >, = ) • Represent ratios and rates in a variety of forms • Use ratios and unit rates to solve problems • Identify and determine equivalent forms of fractions as decimals, as percents, and as ratios
